This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we have the Maui-based group Kūlewa. Nominated for a 2010 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award in the Most Promising Artist category (based on their self-titled debut album), the group consists of Damon Parrillo, Keali’i Lum, Ron Hetteen, and Greg Marsh.
The group plays a variety of genres, from contemporary and traditional Hawaiian to acoustic, blues, jazz and more. Their sound combines a local feel with unique arrangements of familiar classics, and their original compositions evoke visions of life on Maui.
All group members began playing music in childhood. Damon started out playing bass, later switching to guitar, and has formed his own production company as well. He wrote all of the original songs on the group’s album. Keali’i first played piano, followed by saxophone, bass, ‘ukulele, and guitar, and has performed with such greats as Dennis Pavao, Uncle Richard Ho’opi’i, and Keali’i Reichel. Ron began playing guitar, and later sang in various bands and choirs. He also worked as a lu’au musician. Greg began playing drums and turned that passion into a professional career spanning 30 years, performing and recording in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and Ireland. He has produced albums featuring Maui’s finest jazz artists.
Don’t miss your chance to see this great new Maui-based band (and pick up an autographed copy of their CD, if you don’t yet have one)! Join host Tony Solis on Thursday, May 6 from 6-8 p.m. HST in the Pakele Lounge at the Ala Moana Hotel (410 Atkinson Dr., Honolulu).
