Uke Fest Workshops

10:30 – 12:00
James Hill, Ukulele Music from the Future (All Levels Welcome),$35
Open to all levels, this workshop will open your ears to new musical possibilities. Step outside the constraints of traditional musical forms and journey into a world of pure sound. Explore minimalist soundscapes, conceptual compositions, collective improvisation, graphic scores and more. Get out of that musical rut and into a new ukulele adventure! All levels welcome. Handouts provided.

Kimo Hussey, Easy, Useable Introductions in Six Keys (Beginning to Intermediate), $35
Cool intros to songs can significantly enhance the quality and presentation of your favorite tunes. Learning introductions in several keys can also get the uke player on the road to playing a lead or "mid-song" fillers. Spice up what you already know and learn more about the fretboard at the same time.

Casey McGill, Swing Ukulele: It’s the Strum (Intermediate), $35
Swing rhythm is a great feeling, and the ukulele is a great instrument for creating that feeling! Learn the swing strum, and play some easy tunes. We will cover a few variations, and the all-important damping of the strings. Music handouts provided. Bring your recording device. Our tuning will be G-C-E-A.

1:00 – 2:30
Kimo Hussey, Keys to the Fretboard (Intermediate), $35
Take the songs you know in the key of C, F and G and learn to play them in the keys of A, Bb and D. The idea is to expand your fretboard comfort zone to include playing in the less standard keys of A, Bb and D. This helps players to understand the fretboard and it provides them the ability to play songs in a key that may be better suited to a singer’s vocal range.

Ralph Shaw, Ukulele Strumming Techniques (Beginning), $35
This workshop will get you playing and ready to move beyond the basics. Ralph will teach you some incredibly useful and simple techniques and troubleshoot any ukulele problems you may be having. Familiar songs demonstrating these techniques will be played: basic strum, hand position, wrist flexibility, using a pick (or not), strumming in 4/4 and 3/4 time. We will also learn about accents, dynamics (loudness), damping, triplets and rolls, and more if time allows.

Casey McGill, Rumba Meets Ukulele and the 50's Classics (Intermediate), $35
Learn my version of a rumba strum. We break it down (in three sections) and build it up to play some 1950's classic pop tunes: Under the Boardwalk, Save the Last Dance for Me, etc. Bring your recording device. Musical handouts provided. Our tuning: G-C-E-A.

3:00 – 4:30
James Hill, Ukulele Big Band! (Intermediate to Advanced), $35
That's right, ukulele big band. It's time to take a full-blown hip-shakin' big-band swing arrangement and give it a ukulele makeover! All sizes of ukulele are welcome (baritone ukes will have to use a capo). If you've always wanted to experience the thrill of playing in a swing orchestra, now's your chance. A-one, a-two, a-one, two, three, four...

Ralph Shaw, Ukulele Strumming Techniques Too (Intermediate), $35
Are you bored with doing the same strum all the time? Here you can master the building blocks of what is needed to change your strumming style. Listening to well known songs as examples you’ll learn how to create never-ending variation in your strumming technique like: damping, accents, triplets, rolls, start playing up the neck, partial melody playing, pick-strum technique, ornament notes. We’ll lay these techniques on song styles such as: popular songs from the 1920s to 1960s, swing, reggae, Latin, blues, waltz, and Bo Diddley if time allows.

Matt Dahlberg, Music Theory for Ukulele 101 (Beginning), $35
Music theory really isn’t as scary as you might think; in fact, it's fun! This class will introduce you to the world of music theory. Learn things you can actually use with your ukulele and relate it to your playing. Learn why a chord is a chord and learn how to play alternate voicings of basic chords. You will not only learn new things on the ukulele, but you’ll learn why it works.

Uke Fest concert - 7:30 p.m., $18
