This past Thursday night June 10 a group formed by Hawaiian transplants -- Hawaiian Chambers of Commerce of Northern California -- paid tribute to the Brothers Cazimero at the 8th Annual 5 Star Event atop the Westinʻs St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. Performing background music for most of the evening were Hawaiian artists and Bay Area residents Faith Ako and Steven Espaniola.

Kumu hula Mark Kealiʻi Hoʻomalu (Acadamy of Arts) opened the event with a prayer. And the Bay Areaʻs other prestigious kumu hula, Patrick Makuakane delivered the keynote address honoring the Brothers Cazimero. Kumu hula Patrick also had his halau performed hula with Faith and Steven.

Also in attendance among noted Hawaiianʻs was Mountain Apple Musicʻs Jon de Mello and University of Hawaiiʻs Womens Volleyball coach Dave Shoji. (Coach Shoji was in the Bay Area with family for their sonʻs--Kawika-- graduation from Standford. Kawika and his fellow teammates, many from Hawaii, just won the Menʻs NCAA Volleyball championship.

Hi liteʻs of the evening included:

A proclamation by the Mayor of San Francisco for June 10 as Brothers Cazimero Day. (Was priceless seeing the Brothers reaction to this unexpected honor. If memory serves me well Robertʻs reaction was "This is cool".)

Spot hula dancers joining Patrickʻs performing dancers so instead of the six, the dozen plus dancers stretched across the room.

My education of the fact that the Brothers along with Peter Moon as being credited for the renaissance of Hawaiian music.

Kumu hula Patrick Makuakaneʻs speech witty and entertaining. (If you are so fortunate to hear him tell story, you cannot help but smile.)

You are being honored, so I would not expect you to perform. Nonetheless
Brother Robert joining in with Faith and Steven.
The Brothers Cazimero performing a mele for a very appreciative audience.
And when the audience got kumu Patrick to hula, there was Brother Robert joining his former student.

I was able to thank Brother Roland for their vocal arrangements which my brother and I use when we performed.

So a certain member of HCCNC always looks for an excuse to play. And before Faith and Steven returned, after the Brothers Cazimeroʻs mele, he picked the guitar and strummed. Didnʻt sound right so he lost his chance. (Did not realize that Brother Roland had slacked the strings)

Finally after too many free Primo beers (IMHO the new formula taste great) and many free shots of sake, I got to spend a free night at the hotel even though I live in the City. HCCNC used the room as a dressing room.

FYI, HCCNC was formed to keep Hawaiian transplants connected not only with each other, but also with the islands. This includes awarding college scholarships to students from the islands. Kawika Shoji was one of the former awardees.

Genaro

Should I? Itʻs only $, and where Iʻm going itʻll burn or melt.
