Aloha mai e kakou! I'm a Hawaiian at Heart, and have a passion for da mele. First visited O'ahu in '77, heard Olomana, and never turned back! I've been to the Islands well over 30 times, and each visit my priority is to seek out local mele (not hapa haole kine), as well as to snorkel ;) As you know, there are MANY other things to love about Hawai'i too! Over the years I have seen many wonderful composers, singers, players, and dancers. Some well-known, some not. In '85, my daughters and I saw Braddah IZ with Makaha Sons, and didn't even know who they were, but knew we had experienced something magical! IZ was just a kid then, and I knew he was gonna be "something". I could go on for a long time about all the performers I've had the joy and privilege of seeing, but instead I will tell you that I share my passion of da mele, and aloha by being a volunteer DJ on a Hawaiian radio station in Watsonville, CA, KAPU lp-104.7, where we play mele 24/7. We're the only 24 hr mele station on the mainland. We DJs "work" there for the love of da mele, people, aina, and aloha of the Islands. Well, this is a start...I look forward to getting to know you, and sharing the magic of mele! Malama pono, Honugal (aka Karen)

Sorry no one else responded here sooner, welcome to da Patch Karen!
Yes I just saw Jerry Santos/Olomana in Honolulu last week at the Hokus, sat at a table with a Lady and a Gentleman who turned out to be Jerry's (main?) producer. Keep up the good work there in Watsonville, best Hawaiian Music station on the Mainland! Too bad I am out of range here on the Penninsula. KKUP has a Hawaiian Music program on Friday mornings but it does not compare with the musical range and quality of what KAPU plays.

Hi, Karen. I, too, am remiss for not welcoming you sooner. Karen is my facebook friend, and she works with Norm Markowitz at the radio station. She sure knows plenty about the music we all love so dearly and I beleive she is a great resource for information if we are looking for a cerain song or artists.
Welcome to Taro Patch, Karen. I am so glad you decided to join us! |

Aloha e kakou! Mahalo plenty for your warm welcome and kind words! Lawrence and Paul, it is our hope that we can get KAPU live-streamed within a year. Hopefully, in a matter of months! Lawrence, how fun that you got to sit with such a prominent figure of mele. Wish I could have heard that conversation! And thank you so much for liking KAPU. I sure had a big thrill meeting many of our favorite performers in Hilo during Merrie Monarch this year. Hi Andy! Tell me about your experience with mele? And Wanda, gosh how do I begin? You have inspired me, taught me plenty, and continue to amaze me with your abundant knowledge of all things Hawaiian! I swear you teach me a new thing or two everyday! And dat mele you share...love it! Most of all, I love your attitude and great big heart. We just gotta meet someday, Sista!
A hui hou, Karen aka honugal PS: come to think of it Wanda you got me on TP! Mahalo... |

Howzit Karen, so glad you joined the Taropatch ohana! I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of your fellow KAPU DJs (Norm and Bill) when I performed with Patrick at his Don Q's CD release party back in April. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to talk story with you that day but hope to meet you in person sometime soon. In any case, mahalo plenty for all the terrific work all of you do in helping to get Hawaiian music on the air here on the mainland... |

Aloha e to Art, Alana, Alika, and Bubba! Mahalo for welcoming me to the Patch! Yes, Art, I was remiss in not introducing myself at Patrick's wonderful concert. Kinda shy, I guess. Hope to see you again really soon, and I promise I won't be a wuss, ha! I have seen you play on a couple of other occasions, too, and didn't meet you then either, auwe. We love your music! Alana, tell me about yourself? Mahalo Alika! See you on FB. Bubba, I saw you at the Hapa concert ;) Didn't we all have the greatest time!? A hui hou...Honugal |
