Aloha Kakou,
My name is Jim Samuelson from Calgary, AB, Canada. I play, learn, and enjoy all Hawaiian music, culture & hula. I am a touring musician with a group called The Buccaneers and have started a little Hawaiian group called Aloha, EH! I also own a music store/school/booking agency called Bignote Music. We produce in-store webcast concerts once a month on Sunday nights and I sometimes do 2 live internet radio shows and a podcast from the store as well. I have also started up a weekly Kanikapila on Sundays 1-3pm at Bignote Music.

Aloha Jim! Welcome to Taro Patch. I love the name of the group, Aloha, Eh. Cracks me up, because when we went to Niagara Falls years ago there was a dinner play every evening called "Oh Canada, Eh". We never got to see the play because we had small kids who would have made EVERYONE miserable trying to sit still in a play so Paul took them to Laser tag while I, ahem, "visited" the casino.
I know how hard it is to get Hawaiian music going in the frozen north. We are in Cleveland, Ohio and we are slowly starting to get things going. Our greatest news is that we now have a Big Island man and his wife who will be joining us at our future kanikapilas and `ukulele sessions. And there is a small restaurant about an hours drive from us that serves real Hawaiian food, including luau leaves which his Mama ships to him from Big Island. We are going to work with him to let us hold monthly kanikapilas at his place and maybe, just maybe, hope upon hope, that word of the kanikapila may grow, as may the community of Hawaiians and Hawaiians at heart. |

Hi Jim - I remember you from Aloha Camp 2009 - Alison and I were the English ones.
We too are very much hoping to be there in February 2011 as well. See you there if all goes to plan!

Now I have yet another reason to get back to Calgary someday. I've driven across much of Canada from Vancouver to Toronto, but stayed south of Calgary, and I have a few musician-friends there (James Keelaghan & Oscar Lopez amongst them). |

Man, this guy was incredible - one minute he is dancing the most touching hula with Hope, the next minute chanting up a storm while playing his brand-new Ipu Heke, -which he made himself!- and then showing his newfound slack key skills, courtesy of Keola. Jim, you are a blast to hang out with! |
