Are you literally talking ANY kumu, as in past and present? If so I'd have to go with Uncle Ray Kane...still my favorite slack key player. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

I was having similar regrets. But as I am discovering, you are never too late to start.
To Slip... Agree about Alan Akaka. If I were not so loyal to him, I would post a clip of the great teacher taking a lesson himself. I have a tape of a teenaged Alan taking a lesson with Jerry at Harry's Music. This is more encouraging than listening to Alan today - because I realize you can go from next to nothing to extraordinary with a little talent and whole lot more heart and dedication.

Interesting question. I wish that I could study with a kumu regularly so perhaps it is a matter of wishing that I lived in Hawaiʻi.
Although my learning is slow, I have been blessed to sit before many great teachers. With a couple of you dreaming of Uncle Ray Kāne as your kumu, I feel very lucky to have made the drive out to his house quite a few times. Thanks for reminding me how special those times were. Gosh, more than 10 years ago.

Like Wanda, I would put Amy Stillman right up there on my list for the same reasons she mentioned. I would also love learning from Keali'i Reichel and/or Puakea Nogelmeier. Hanohano no laua!
Musically speaking, I would love to have Aaron J. Sala is a vocal coach and accompanist. |

Closet bassists of the world unite! I was going to say my ideal teacher would be Byron Yasui or Van Diamond, but after tonite @ Kani Ka Pila Grille, my dream would be to study bass with Jeff Teves. (since my own ʻohana hasnʻt shared his bass-playing techniques . . . ) |

I would like to study fashion with Jeff Teves. He has the best collection of aloha wear for his musicians - most private label, most custom made to his specifications - that I have ever seen.
I, too, would like to study with Dr. Stillman. But what with her based in Minnesota or Montana or wherever she is, a flight to Honolulu would be cheaper! Sounds like a good idea right now...
Dr. Stillman is probably too modest to mention that she is featured in an article in Honolulu Magazine this month. She is interviewed about her new collaboration with Michael Cord - a CD featuring long out-of-print hula kuahu. I have listened to the CD with great interest and even pretended to understand it.
It's this issue... on newsstands now.

I want to learn Frank Hewettʻs secret of how tunics can make everything between the shoulders and knees lose 40lbs instantly.
And my inner goddess would die to study floral coiffure with Kehau Tamure. |

Sonny Chillingworth. Seemed to be a very wise man. Would hope that some of that wisdom would wear off on me. Plus his smooth nahenahe style was second to none. |

In my youth, I was mesmerized by the sound of Arthur Lyman playing vibes. Thankfully, here on Kaua`i we have a fabulous vibe player in Aunty Polei Palmeira who performs regularly on-island. But are any young players taking up this rare instrument today?? Please, please, please... |

Yah, Auntie! Lyman was my first exposure to Exotica. I saw him, and then Martin Denny in LA in the late 50's. I've messed wid 'em in my jazzoid past, but they are THE WORST when it comes to schleppin' 'em around, in the same categoy as pedal steel guitar and drum kits. Need wan steady gig, yah(and probably a van or pickup, too)?
