I have been on this site learning about slack key now for about 5 years and this will be my first paying gig. Boy, how things have spiraled out of control! LOL!
I will be playing slack key in the dining room of Anderson Japanese Gardens (a beautiful place) in Rockford, IL., on 8/10/10 from 6:30 to 7:30pm. Their line-up so far is me on Tuesdays and a string quartet on Fridays. It is an upscale crowd so this is a lot like jumping in to unknown waters head first. I can do it.

Bob,

Spiraled out of control in a good, fun way! An hour each week? I love your recordings and know that it'll be a piece of cake. Smile and enjoy it.

Are you all set on amplification?

Yes, if I do well we are looking at a weekly gig.
My amp is a Roland AC-60 w/sub woofer and I will put it on a PA stand. I am going to mic this time because I am using four guitars (2 nylon). If I can avoid mic issues, it should work out okay.

I don't think anyone here is in my area and planning to visit, but just in case I should mention that there has been a change.
The place I agreed to play for wanted to change the payment method and I decided to cancel. After canceling (but not before), we found a compromise but I have not re-scheduled.

Well, I am proud of you, Bob! You make mighty fine music, so beautiful, meticulously played. It needs to be shared with other folks!

Aloha Bob,

Have you had your first gig yet? If so, how did it work out? If not, has it been scheduled yet?

Michael: Not rescheduled yet.
Funny how a scheduled performance works me over. I always seem to regret agreeing to play within a few days of agreeing, then I find the courage to forge ahead and I finally step on stage with expectations of pulling it off and doing it well. I rarely back out after committing.
This time, when I cancelled because of the change, it was like a weight lifted off my shoulders and so I knew that I may have pushed myself a little too much. I had never played for more than 1/2 hour and this time I was signed up for a full hour. I know I can do even more than an hour BTW. I may reschedule in the future but not soon.

I filp-flop between being very confident and a condition that is way far away from being confident.
I wonder how many others struggle with this too.

Bob

Keep us posted, Bob. We wish you well and I suspect that the more gigs you do, the more you'll find that balance you seek. Experience really does pay off.

Aloha Bob,

If your live ki ho'alu is anywhere near as good as your YouTube videos, and I'm sure that it is, you should be very confident. Retro is certainly correct that it all gets easier with experience. Break a leg.
