Rick is truly a living definition of "Hawaiian gentleman"...so full of aloha for everyone...and talented, too. When he and brother Solomon sang together in live performances, it was truly special. I miss their live duets, but am glad for the many recordings they made over the years.
This particular mele is one of my favorites...sung with such love for their home area. The brothers recorded it on vinyl in 1976 (Ho`i Hou), and Richard recorded a solo version on CD in 2003 (Holoholo Mai Maui).
Beautiful mele. Mahalo for posting the link, Mark! |

Speaking of the National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowships, here's a listing of honorees by year:
http://www.nea.gov/honors/heritage/fellows/NHF_listYear.php
You could spend a lifetime learning about these wonderful people and the folk musics and cultures they represent.
And, apropos of another thread here, notice the women:
Libba Cotten, Genoa Keawe, Queen Ida, Lydia Mendoza, Mavis Staples, Janette Cater, Wanda Jackson, Koko Taylor, Liz Carrol, Jean Ritchey, Etta Baker, Olabelle Reed, Lilly May Ledford, Bessie Jones....
hoo boy, that would be some band! |

I was there the evening that George Naope was honored. I sat between Uncle George and Mavis Staples at the same table. I was like... What? Because what can you say in that situation?
And then, before even being honored, Uncle George excused himself momentarily. He wheeled himself in his wheelchair away from the table - presumably to visit the restroom - and never returned. When we went looking for him, a security guard informed us that he wheeled himself to an elevator, down to the street, caught a cab, and went back to the hotel. We'll chalk it up to his humility. But, honestly, Mavis Staples notwithstanding, things were probably more lively back at the Holiday Inn.
