And now for something completely different...
Courtesy of The Surfer's Path, an international green surf mag.
quote: The Majestic Plastic Bag A moving wildlife mockumentary about one of the most common species on Earth right now, the plastic bag. Made for Heal The Bay and circulated by Rise Above Plastics it has excellent commentary by Jeremy Irons.
"The vast concrete rivers of Los Angeles, home to literally dozens of animals."
Funny, and sadly, all too true.
Let's agree to stop using these horrid things, yes? Plastic never dies, but it does kill.

Well done. Thanks for posting the link, Mark. FYI: there are garbage patches in the Pacific, Atlantic and the Gulf. And -- because I remember when my home of origin used to be flat, flat, flat -- I'll include a Dishonorable Mention to the mountains of landfills sticking out like sore thumbs behind the palm trees off of I-95 in south Florida. Makes you think about first of the 3 R's - Reduce, reuse, recycle. |

I’m very pleased to report that I found out the other day that here in the UK plastic bag use has fallen by 64% in the last few years. 4.6 billion fewer bags used than in 2006.
I think the retailers have played a big part in this. Things used to get put in bags as a matter of course, every time I bought anything from a magazine or a sandwich to a television. Hilariously, the television was too big to put in a bag, so they sellotaped a plastic bag to the outside of the box. Why, I have absolutely no clue.
Nowadays, I almost always get asked ‘Do you want a bag with that?’. 90% of the time the answer will be ‘No, not really’. People are using old style Hessian type shopping bags for groceries and so on, and nobody seems to mind.
It can be done.

I try to remeber to always use my own reusable shopping bags. sadly I've found a lot of cashiers seem to get annoyed with that and find it a hastle. Others are very supportive. I think if more people would do that it would become more acceptable and common place. One of the places I shop -Aldi food market, don't even have bags, you have to bring your own. My down fall is I forget to bring them , I'm still trying ot develop it as a habit. I've noticed too often cashiers will use way to many plastic bags too than nessesary wrapping every item separately in several bags. i take it out and fit it all in one.
I was watching a discovery channel show about the pacific ocean, one very disturbing part of it was about a Hawai'ian beach where all manner of trash washes up on and also what was happening to sea bird populations from them swallowing all sorts of plastic garbage.
here is an interesting sort of related awarness project

thats another factor, plastic bottles. There are dangerous chemicals released out of some of them too. i've switched to a refillable glass bottle with a protective holder for my water and use a water filter. |
