Hmm scared, nervouse excited, in awe, good fun, plenty laughs, much aloha and support, relief. The gamut of emotions felt at last week's Ka himeni ana. The coolest was realizing a dream and despite hardships, continuing on.
We met some Major challenges on the way to the competition. The biggest is when 2 weeks away from the contest, our uke/third part bowed out.It would have been too easy to walk away, but I wanted to show my kids that despite the challenges put in our way (there was some other internal band stuff going on too)we committed to the contest and weren't going to let fear stand in our way. So I had to recruit my wife to sing his part. Now she hasn't really played uke for awhile so she was soo nervous. Forgot some things, but that's okay. We went there for the experience, if we won, that'd be nice, but no biggy.
There was a time when all the bands left the stage area and only me, my wife and Kapili were in the theater. Like a little kid, Kapili asked if he could run on stage and play by himself. To see the smile on his face and to feel the joy he had all alone on that stage was priceless.
This competition is unlike many that I've been to where the contestants are "cut throat". In fact one of the groups forgot their words and the entire audience helped sing along with them until they could find their parts...the same feeling of aloha and support was backstage too! |
