I just finished watching video of Led Kaapana doing a version of Manuela Boy. A couple of the verses are originally from a calypso song out of Trinidad.
Here are the verses in question
I want to marry this wahine I know
Her name is Haunani Ho
I told my papa and he said no
Haunani is your sister but your mama don't know

I told my mama what my papa had said
She said no hila hila
You can marry Haunani Ho
Your papa's not your papa but your papa don't know

Does anyone know when these were added to manuela boy? They do not seem to appear in the original Johnny Noble version but Led did not just add them on the spot a couple nights ago either.
Here is a link to the video of Led

here is a link to a previous TP thread where I copied the lyrics above

I got the following info from this website:

http://www.squareone.org/Hapa/m2.html

Note the information about "Various Versions"

This seems like the verse that Led added is listed.

Bill Tapia on his "Duke of Uke" CD from a few years ago does the same verse as Led did that night.

I have a dozen versions of this song in my music collection. It seems like every one that was recorded is different. None the same as any of the rest, and only one that is mostly like the way the original lyrics were written.

It seems as if every performer adds or changes verses to these songs. A few variations are below:

Papa works for the stevedore
Mama makes the leis
Sister goes with the Haole boy
Comes home any old time

Brother goes to the beach all day
To look at wahines in bikinis
He wears dark glasses and a coconut hat
You no can see where his eyeballs at

I want to marry this wahine I know
Her name is Haunani Ho
I told my papa and he said no
Haunani is your sister but your mama don't know

I told my mama what my papa had said

You can marry Haunani Ho
Your papa's not your papa but your papa don't know

These extra verses probably came from "Shame & Scandal", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shame_%26_Scandal

There is also a similar song, from the girl's perspective by Buffy St.Marie, called Johnny Be Fair:

Her version has a much more Appalachian character. There are versions on YouTube. Who first put the verses into Manuela boy, I'm not sure. But listening to Led live or on recordings, it's obvious he listened to a lot more than Hawaiian music. Thesre's a lot of different music flowing through his repertoire.

Puns, jokes, sayings and songs that mock the human condition are universal. Friends of mine went on a dig in Egypt. The ancient grafitti found in the ruins of the workers' neighborhood was surprisingly current, when translated. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
