This week’s Pakele Live! with Tony Solis is a collaboration with Nā Hōkū Hanohano and Hawai’i Music Award winner Eric Lee and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), to publicize the upcoming MDA benefit concert, "Lucky We Live Hawai'i, Lei'd Back" at Honolulu Hale on November 5. (Performers at that concert will include Eric, Maunalua, Natalie Ai Kamauu, Melveen Leed, Peter Milo and more.)
Eric is widely known as one-third of the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award Winning group, Nā Kama. Together, they released four CDs, two of which earned Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. His creative musical arrangements and ability to perpetuate the Hawaiian language contributed to the sound of Nā Kama throughout his 10-year journey with them.
He began playing music at age nine, learning to play the ‘ukulele, keyboard/piano, guitar, and electric & upright bass. He studied choral music and theory in high school and college, and recorded his first CD with the band the Kanile‘a Collection in 1994. He was also a member of the popular island music group the Ka‘ala Boys, releasing three studio CDs, a Christmas single, and a greatest hits CD.
Eric has also worked as a studio-for-hire musician, playing on, producing, and composing works for other artists’ projects. In 2007 he released a CD single, “Camp Lē‘ahi,” a song he composed for the Camp Lē‘ahi summer program, where he works as music teacher. In 2009 he released his first solo CD, “Crossroads.” He was one of the first artists in Hawai’i to release his album directly to download. “Crossroads” won a Hawai‘i Music Award for “Contemporary Hawaiian CD of the Year.” He has traveled to Sāmoa, Tahiti, Rarotonga, Aotearoa, Guam, China, and Japan.
