When mum asked me to watch the old Charlie Chan series of movies with her I didn't know the character was based (loosly) on a real person, mabee some of you have heard of, a chinese/hawaiian police officer and detective who was a legend for his fearlessness and record of arrests.
On the DVD tonight was a short documentary about this amazing man whom I'd not heard of before. things I found of interest was that he was a paniolo before becoming an officer, and instead of carrying a gun used a bullwhip. He also helped form their humane society and was involved with the lepers being sent to Moloka'i that I read so much about recently.
The documentary was nicely done with interviews of family and old photos, more info:

there isn't much info that I could find on him but did find this.

here is a very dramatised short film on him. realy his story deserves to be told in a full feature film:

Hey, Alice - you should check out this thread: http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7717
Here in Seattle, I've been working with an amateur radio-theater ensemble that is doing occasional new scripts, fictionalizing Chang Apana's life.
Several musicians from TaroPatch were involved in creating the musical soundtrack of the first episode. Noeau stars in the title role.
On November 7, we're doing a recording of our new third episode in front of a live audience, and I'm directing this time (as well as appearing in it). |

Aunty Iwalani Kamahele's father knew Chang Apana when he was on the HPD. Aunty sang in the first episode. Small world, ya? |

Do tell.
I appear in the Chang Apana programs as his partner-in-crime fighting, Henry Chillingsworth. (A most haole role, so I don't have to try to do damage to any pidgin.) |

Braddah Ed, if you come to da show, I am putting you in front of a microphone and shoving a script in your hands! The only actor we've got who can do pidgin is Al, and he's tied down to the lead character. That's the most embarrassing aspect of these shows, I fear. We even had a dialogue coach come in for a session on the first episode (she's from Hawai`i, too), but it's a lost cause. I just have to keep telling myself "it's an amateur company" - but Al & I have fun with is, so that's why we do it. |
