The hardest thing is that you not only have to spell the word but you have to define it!

I would love to have it but I can't get very many people at all to play regular Scrabble with me, so I play with "Maven". I know I would have no partners here for Hulo. It might, though, be a good way for us to practice `olelo at the halau.

Hmmmm. wonder if there could be a computerized version of the game.

But I don't know if some of you may remember a few years back, I proposed the idea of a Scrabble sort of game in Hawaiian but you couldn't' use a regular Scrabble game for it because of the mix of letters and I think Keola Donaghy figured out the prevalence of letters in the Hawaiian language and how many of the vowels you might need in a "Scrabble" game. http://www.taropatch.net/forum/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=4582&SearchTerms=scrabble

Does anyone besides me appreciate the irony that the makers of (or, at least, those who are responsible for marketing) the game make two language mistakes in the first sentence alone? And not merely language mistakes - mistakes in naming the Hawaiian language.

Olelo Hawaii should be 'olelo Hawai'i. I don't believe the 'okina is optional.

I am going to play Find The 'Olelo Mistakes In The Advertisement for Hulo! It's free and way more fun.

My post was short-sighted. The language errors actually come sooner than the first line of text. The name of the game is wrong.

Someone who speaks 'olelo kanaka can correct me, but I believe the name of the game should be Hulō!

Wow, this really is fun! And so, so sad.

But the game folks said the game will be played without diacriticals. Perhaps that is why the mistakes in their literature.

As an avid Scrabbler player myself (former Philadelphia Scrabble Club member), I want to say that I understand the need for consistency in rules in a crossword-based game. But if somebody threw an 'okina down in this game, I would simply figure out how to use it.

(And mahalo, Bruddah Al!)

I would love to play Scrabble with you, Bill. I would love a competitive game, so next time you come Ohio way, stop off in Cleveland. I'll feed you guys and we can have a rousing game. You gotta go through Cleveland to get to Findlay or wherever you said your sweetie's family live.

I'm not one who is fussy about spelling myself, you can determine a word but the content of the sentence often, but for me too this is something that I am finding very peturbing, I keep coming across sites listing hawai'ian phrases and words and they often don't use these special marks at all, but as you know, if you don't it changes the whole pronunciation of the word!
