Ken,
I saw your facebook post and completed the survey. I look forward to reading your songwriter book.
I urge Taropatchers to complete the survey. There are 4 questions so it only takes a minute.
I suppose the topic has been discussed in many iterations here. Do we dare discuss it again? |

I saw it on Facebook, too and filled out the survey. The questions are easy to answer but boy I can imagine the wide range of answers they will bring.
We can hardly wait for the book, Kenneth. Hope you might come back when the survey is pau and share a wee bit of info that you might have gained from the survey. We are getting curiouser and curiouser with every Facebook post you make...like your interview with Roland Cazimero, etc. It has to be a hoot just gathering info for the book. |

Thanks for being a part of the process. For some reason my final question offended a few people. The obvious point is that if there is an opinion about what you believe IS Hawaiian music, then you should know what is NOT Hawaiian music.
I am not looking for any right or wrong answer, just interested in hearing peopleʻs thoughts. This is a great way to find out what listeners are enjoying.
Anyway, mahalo nui for sharing. |

Uncle Kenneth -
I took some time with your survey and hope my responses are of some use. Your book should be fascinating. Best of luck with it.
Thank you once again for the warm feelings of aloha you gave me through your performances on Pakele Live and at the E Kanikapila Kakou.

Mark,
Mahalo nui for your kokua. This will truly help me with my research. As you well know, this is a tough and sore subject, but one that is always worthy of discussion, because it is about mea Hawai‘i. |

Music is part of life, life needs to be discussed. Otherwise interesting and important details may be overlooked. |

Truly, Kory, it did make me stop and ponder what causes me to consider a piece of music to be Hawaiian music. The composer? The language? The style of music? Where it is mostly performed? Who performs it? And so on. It was an interesting "thought experiment" - especially since I kept coming up with exceptions to each criterion I considered writing down. I ended up feeling that Uncle Kenneth had provided a useful and mind-opening exercise aside from researching for his book. |

I took the survey as well. I felt the questions were very non-biased and allowed people to apply their own thoughts to the subject matter. As for the question of who aren't Hawaiian artists, that may be a little unfair because so many musicians here play many different types of music. We can take an individual song and ask ourselves if it is Hawaiian. Willie K likes to play rock music sometimes, Brother Noland dabbles in reggae, Teresa Bright plays smooth jazz, Makana plays, well I don't what he's doing half the time. Point being I don't think any artist would want to be limited to one category no matter where/what they play. There is the universal category of "Island Music" that is found in Jamaica, Trinidad, Fiji and elsewhere that a lot of music in Hawai`i has characteristics of. That should be embraced instead of trying to force one's mind into thinking that they are playing just Hawaiian Music. Anyways, just go to mele.com and pursue all the different categories of music on there. The beautiful thing is there are so many types of music being playied in Hawai`i that we need to have this discussion at all. It would be a shame if we were so insular that we only had one type of music. |
