I have done a video study of Hi`ilawe in the past and I will go on record as stating the Tia Carrere & Daniel Ho version is, well, uh,...ahem, my least favorite. It doesn't even feel like Hi`ilawe.

But then again, we really don't even know if the Hi`ilawe we are expecting to hear is the real version of Hi`ilawe anyhow, because there is some mystery as to its origins actually. There are other mele written by other people who have lyrics very similar but melody way different. Cannot find videos of those because I think everyone adopts the Gabby version as the real Hi`ilawe. And it may be.

But boy oh boy do I agree the Duke Domingo Hi`ilawe is so very, very good. That is one of the videos that began my love and friendship with Duke and Jay. It will always be special and close to my heart.

Mahalo for putting this list together.

I agree with your comment about Cyril. But I'm also a big fan of seeing a lovely hula along with the song.

Back to the song.

I can actually remember where I was the first time I heard Hi'ilawe. It is probably the song most responsible for my love of Hawaiian music. After I heard it I just had to get as many Gabby cassettes as I could find. It just blossomed from there.

haunts me sleeping and waking."

Aloha,

markwitz there are so many extraordinary Hi'ilawes on YouTube by Uncle Cyril. It is great to have one with some fine hula. I never managed to find a Hi'ilawe played by Uncle Ledward. Is there one tucked away out there somewhere?

Dunno if there's a youtube but I always like to compare/contrast Sonny Chillngsworth's version with Gabby's, Cyril's, Ledward's, and other mentioned renditions.

Wanda, thank you for the links to all those wonderful Hi'ilawes. I am perplexed at how Iz' version has me tearing up when I have no Hawaiian. It is fascinating how the Hi'ilawes range from versions that sound off the mark, through wonderfully played and sung versions, to versions that are disturbingly raw.

Noeau, thank you for letting me know about the Hi'ilawe on Uncle Ledward's new CD. I will buy it when it gets off backorder. I'm still kicking myself for missing Uncle Ledward's mainland tour.

Um, the two URLʻs were the same -- maybe look up and post the one you left out.

Also. Ledward recently played online a very different version of Hi'ilawe that he said that he got from his mother. Different melody and chord progression. Looking through things to see if I can find it....

E komo mai Sundiego.

It would not surprise me if there are multiple versions of many songs. This IS folk music, after all. Then there is the wonderful story of how Mark Hanson faithfully transcribed and published a Led song in his slack-key book, only to learn after the book came out that Uncle had dropped into a different song in the middle. I forget which one....
