Now I know what I, a hillbilly old lady, sounds like when I try to sing Hawaiian music. Surely I must sound ridiculous. Nothing like a dose of reality. Not that I have the pipes of Streisand anyhow, but well, some things just ain't fittin'. That does it for me for trying sing Hawaiian music.

Recorded back in 1974. Just about when the "Hawaiian Music Renaissance" was starting. Just think how differently things might have turned out if Barbara kept on doing "Island Music". Oy vay. (Wow, I just realized how similar "Oy vay" is to "Auwe". Maybe my Grandmother WAS Hawaiian after all.)

This album was recorded in 1974, when Disco was just coming onto the horizon. No mountains crashed into the sea, and life went on. John Hartford said: "I play the music that I like. If other people like it too, that's well and good. If not. at least I haven't wasted my time." Do what makes you happy. The inner person has to be fed, too. Buy what you like, sing what pleases you.

.

According to the liner notes on my Ka'au Crater Boys disc (Troy and 'em do a much better version of this song), "Guava Jelly" was composed by the much respected "Hawaiian" Composer Bob Marley. This is why it is in Reggae Beat of course. I doubt the Crater Boys would get their credits wrong.

Well...then maybe I don't feel so bad. I don't know. I heard it and I was just stunned at how horrible it was. Kind of like Dean "Tex" Martin and his cowboy and country songs.

Could be worse, (and speaking of Disco on the Horizon), you could post some youtube links to that Disco Album done by Ethel Merman:
