I found this forum a few months ago, but just joined.
I was born on Oahu and lived in Kailua until I was 7. I hadn't seen my home town since 1961, until our Christmas vacation 2010. I had the thrill of seeing my kids swim and boogie board at Kailua Beach where I swam as a kid. This trip also played a big part in reconnecting me with Hawaiian music that I heard as a kid, in our home and at gatherings with friends and family. I've played guitar (poorly) for 40 years, but never felt such a connection to music as I have learning slack key. So here I am!

Welcome, Pat! You will find many folks who wish they were there with you in Kailua, including me. My sweetie lived on Mokulua Road in Lanikai, and I loved driving through Kailua to his house. That was in the 70's. Now big froo-froo neighborhood!
And I miss Liberty House...

Aloha e Pat! What a lovely story that your kids got to swim same place you swam as a kid! And Kailua Beach is a mighty pretty place at which to do it. I am glad that you are feeling a renewed connection by playing slack key. Please indulge Auntie a bit and share with us what got you back into the music of Hawai`i. What was the impetus that drew you back to it enough to undertake the difficult study of slack key? (I am very niele.)
Kailua is big froo-froo neighborhood, Julie. Get plenty traffic in the middle of town for sure. But even still, it only took us about 15 minutes to go over the Pali to Duke's house and that kind of travel is nothing compared to driving from Waikiki to anywhere. And what a drive every morning seeing that Pali and the mist surrounding it. Majestic! |

Julie,
Yes, I remember Liberty House from when we lived in Kailua in the 50s. It was a BI uptown kind of store to me then. We lived just across the park from it. It's a grocery market now.
We went to my old house and knocked on the door to ask if I could take pictures of the outside to show my brother and sisters. My wife and kids hung back by the car. When I told her my dad had had the house built in 1952 for $14,000, her eyes got big. She waved us all inside, and she gave us a tour, so I had lots of nice pictures to show my sibs. She said there was a couple that stopped there about 20 years ago that had lived there .After she described them I was sure it was my parents, both gone now. Later her husband came home and we talked about the improvements they made. They moved there 40 years ago, so it was still high, but affordable, not like now. It was a sweet visit.
Aunty Wanda,
I have missed Hawaiian heart, music and hula ever since we came to the mainland. As I got older, I would get misty-eyed whenever I saw hula, but the music didn't grab grab me that way for a long time. I started getting interested in slack key last summer when we were preparing for our trip. I found some nice music and hula on youtube, then at a folk festival here I was showing one of the guitars I build, and a guy in our luthiers group, Hawaiian, was playing with his group so I went to listen. It really took me back. I was sitting near the front and tears were forming, but I didn't want to seem like some basket case, so I tried to maintain, only just barely did. I came home and started looking on the web, found this place, ordered Eddie Kamae's DVD the Hawaiian Way, Then we went to Kailua for Christmas, and I was directed to a few places to buy CDs by a local guy in a guitar shop. Kailua also has a nice CD shop, Hungry Ear, where I found Best of the Gabby Pahinui Band. I'm glad they won't wear out, because I play them a lot. I'm looking at getting Raymond Kane's instructional DVD, also Ozzie Kotani's book and CD.
I think this will be a long and wonderful journey.

Thanks, Jim.
I see you're in SR, near my old stomping grounds. Do you get to the Healdsburg guitar show?

Pat,
Talking about wild and wonderful journeys: in the 70's my sweetheart who lived in Lanikai and was a flight instructor for the Hawai'i Air National Guard, invited me to go see some Hawaiian music one night. I asked him who was playing, and he answered "someone named Gabby Pahinui", but I really just wanted to stay home that night. DUH!
It wasn't until later that I fell in love with Hawaiian music, it changed my whole life. Can I please rewind the clock now so I can go see Gabby?
