You might want to check out a post that was started by Basil Henriques over at the Steel Guitar Forum, in the Steel Without Pedals section. Regarding the HSGA site.

I've been having trouble with the HSGA site, too. Doesn't display any individual posts. |

According to their homepage, their server has a problem. If you read the convention notes on the home page, you will see that they are not scheduling the usual thing at the golf course pavilion this year, that Jerry Byrd started many years back, showcasing the pro Hawaiian steel players of the day. The performances at the Kapiolani Park and the library thing are listed though. |

Ah... I was using "Regarding the HSGA site" as a way of guiding folks to the post. It's the content within the post that got my attention. |

There was a lot of talk about HSGA and the other Hawaiian Steel group, how their member base is aging, and what to to to revitalize them. Chris Kennison is on the HSGA board, I'm a memebr, and Alan Akaka is a past president. It's at the Ka'anpali Beach Hotel, a great venue. As I understand it, the players at the HSGA golf course Hoholaulea are not paid, so it is hard for them to make it. Konabob, Mark, Alan and I are going to Henry Kaleialoha Allen's festival on Maui, ahich will be held at the same time as the HSGA Waikiki convention. Featured artists are Hnery, Alan, Duke Ching, Greg Sardihna and Lion Kobayashi from Japan, all heavy hitters on steel. There will be jams every evening after the show. Attendees will have a chance to play with the artists during their concerts. |

Two sentences need to be interchanged - "It's at" should follow "Konabob". Makes more sense, yeah. I'm still tired and jet lagged from Aloha Camp. |

The HSGA convention convenes at the Queen Kapiolani in Waikiki every other year. This year the convention begins April 27 and ends on April 29. May Day Celebration will feature the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Players in Kapiolani park.
A Ho'olaule'a will not be held this year due to May Day Celebration at Kapiolani Park on Sunday. The Ho'olaule'a is always held on Sundays and so this year conflicted with May Day celebrations. I am sure it will resume the following year.
The guest steel players who perform and play at the Ho'olaule'a do so without pay because The Ala Wai Golf Club House is a public facility where charging admission is prohibited. However in the past, donations have been received from the general public attending the Ho'olauale'a and have gone to the Lunalilo Home for Hawaiian Seniors. All for a good cause.
Aloha, Kona |
