Anyone have the tuning for this great song? I absolutely love it, and I can't find the tab anywhere. Also if anybody knows what instruction book the tab could be found in, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I know that Led plays in C Mauna Loa at times. Low to high: CGEGAE.

Led has a song called "Mauna Loa Slack Key" on "Led Live: Solo". This is an flashy instrumental played in standard tuning in the key of A.(This song is also on the live DVD of Led and Bob Brozman and is also on youtube as well.) But there is a standard about a boat called "Mauna Loa" that I have not heard Led play sofar. But Ray Kane played this other song in Taro Patch tuning as part of a medley on "Punahele". Cyril Pahinui plays "Mauna Loa" in C Major slacked down to between B flat and A to match his vocals on the "Night Moon/ Po Mahina" album. Gabby Pahinui recorded this song three times, all in Taro Patch tuning. A tab transcription of "Maunaloa" (one word) in Taro Patch is in Ozzie Kotani's book "Playing Guitar Hawaiian Style". I find it ironic that nobody seems to play either song in an actual "Maunaloa" tuning, at least not to my knowledge.

There is yet another song called "Old Maunaloa" by Leonard Kwan that is on the "Legendary Leonard Kwan" CD. This is an instrumental in G Maunaloa (DGDEAD)tuning that is transcribed in the "Leonard Kwan Slack Key Instruction Book".

Mark Nelson also has a book (as well as online lessons and tab) with "Maunaloa" in it- the book is called "Old Time Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar". I hope all this confusing info answered your question, instead of confusing you more!

Ah, you may think Maunaloa is about a boat, but it is not really about a boat. It is the ultimate brush-off song.

There are songs about the mountain on TBI. There are songs about a vessel which plied the waters around Hawai'i that was named "Maunaloa" (one word). Then ther is always the hidden meaning in most good mele. This causes confusion in tracking down this one.

E nana, e ho'olohe. E pa'a ka waha, e hana ka lima.
