I am heartbroken. When I was a kid (by which I mean 20 years old), I would call Uncle "K" at Kaimuki Florist where he worked and behind which he kept a music studio. And he would talk to me for hours about Maddy Lam and Kawena Pukui. He turned me on to some great Hawaiian music and some great Hawaiian composers. And most importantly to me, he didn't care where the call originated from.
A hui hou, Uncle "K..." |

When I think of Kahauanu Lake, I not only think of the music of the beautiful recordings done by the Trio, but I also think of his working relationship with May Kawena Pukui, and Maddy Lam. I also think about Maiki Aiu Lake and how that relationship helped to spread and perpetuate not only the wonderful music but also the beautiful hula. Hawaiian Renaissance Man, indeed. A great loss but it's nice to know that his contributions have had such a profound impact on so many. |
