Just got this from folks at the Shannon Center. Heads up, Aliso Viejo CA folks!

DATE: Thursday, March 31, 2011
TIME: 6:30 p.m.
TICKETS: Donate at the door
WHERE: Soka Performing Arts Center

Soka University is opening its new 1,000 seat Soka Performing Arts Center on March 31st for a special Open Rehearsal to benefit tsunami victims in Japan. The Hawaiian band of George Kuo, Aaron Mahi and Martin Pahinui will be rehearsing and helping staff members evaluate and adjust the acoustics of the hall from 6:30 - 7:30 pm. Attendees are asked to make a donation of their choice to the Tsunami Relief Fund of the American Red Cross. This is the first time that a rehearsal in the new performing arts center has been open to the community.

Soka University is proud to share this opportunity to help others and to enjoy the music of George Kuo (6 and 12 string slack key guitar), Martin Pahinui (6 string slack key guitar), and Aaron Mahi (bass guitar) who are masters of the traditional folk art of Hawaiian slack key guitar and vocal melodies. They are known for their deep soulful delivery projected in a language and feeling that anyone can understand and appreciate. Their performance features the intimacy of solo slack key guitar followed by trio jam sessions, alternating spontaneous instrument solos and unique vocal harmonies.

Actually, this isn't the Shannon Center, I don't think. The Shannon Center is at Whittier College. Nonetheless, David Palmer, who did all the Aloha Series at the Shannon Center for years, is, in fact, at Soka University now, hopefully getting an Aloha series started there. I've been going to Whittier for the Hawaiian shows for 10 years; until this year. Traffic on Saturday between San Diego and Whittier has gotten bad enough to disuade me from making any of the events this season. It's cool that the guys will be able to get in there.
