You Tube, week of 3 April 2011

This is going to be a fine and busy week. Wednesday, Paul and I will celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary! He married me at a tender age, you know! I think I was earning about $375/month as a secretary and he was earning minimum wage pumping gas & turning wrenches at a gas station while going to mechanic school. Now we don’t earn anything. We must have regressed.

Anyhow, you will find some treasures indeed in this week’s list. Enjoy!

***Ding Ding Ding**** Ah-ooh-ga *** Find of the week!!!!
Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau featuring Skippy Kamakawiwo`ole, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, Mel Amina, Louis Moon Kauakahi and Sonny Lim singing “Ka Pua E” The poster of this video really wants to hear feedback, so if you could please leave a comment on his You Tube page, that would be great. I understand he worked very hard in restoring the little bit of video that he did put up.

Carmel put together a wonderful video honoring Uncle Ronald Kanahele: A Man & His Music. It is a wonderful video and it was definitely a 3 kleenex box video for me. We miss you Uncle Ronald. Thank you Carmel, for a video that will keep him in ur hearts forever.

Thanks to Duke for calling this to our attention. Kawika Crowley, who had a hand in writing “hawai`I 78”, which is usually attributed only to Mickey Ioane. Please listen to his story and read what he has written about it, and listen to the song as he does it with a bit different chorus that you are used to hearing.

Nice finds! I wish there was more fotage with Skippy. He was as good as IZ and no doubt a great influence on his brother.

I've seen that video of the story of Hawaii78,its a good one, I find it very facinating the histories of song and music. Its interesting how some songs evolve and take on a life of their own. Seems the best ones are written that way too, a sense of kalakupua.

And a very happy anniversary congrats :)

Oooh, I am better than I thought, because I did think it was Tony Conjugacion and Dwight Kanae, but I didn't want to say because I was not sure. It was lovely music and lovely hula for sure! Thanks Derek and Auntie Maria.

I meant to say that I got such a hoot out of Mike Butler's film, especially since Paul and Duke were also a part of that Slack Key Immersion week. Oh how funny that video was, Mike. You had to have done a tremendous amount of work to put together such a masterpiece, not to mention play the nahenahe music.

Wanda, that was a fun week on O'ahu, including getting the chance to meet folks from Taropatch in person who I only knew by forum posts before. Thanks for the comments, but the "tremendous amount of work" was trying to get the voice-overs to cover up the worst of my squeaks and slip-ups on the music, since I still can't seem to play any of the tunes all the way through without flubs.

Eh Bruddah Mike, I thought I recognized that Haole guy hiamoe in A'ala Park. Lucky you nevah get mugged! . Good fun playing that song with you and the gang recently--it went around the circle a few times too! Was that air guitar in Taropatch F? Nice video and very creative.

Aloha,
Doug

on the hula "Mi Nei" sung by Tony Conjugacion--the dancer is Puanani Jung, who is kumu hula of Hālau Lani Ola in Mission Viejo, California. Pua is the daughter of Puanani Alama.

Aloha, Doug- maybe the many frustrating gremlins in the iMovie program slowed it down or lowered the pitch a little but, no, the air guitar stays in Taropatch G. It is a delicate and finely-crafted instrument and I do not like to change it from one tuning to another. However, I'm thinking of investing in a second one to keep in an F tuning to take to kanikapilas.
