Does anyone have suggestions of music I can/should take in while on Oahu the first ten days of May? Any advice will be gratefully received. I plan, of course, to go to the Willows to see PakeleLive which I always watch from home.

Mahalo nui,

Led Kaapana at Kona Brewing Company Sunday nights, music every night at Chais Island Bistro, check their web site for specifics, Kani Kapila Grill, every night, check with them, Slack Key Sundays at the Waikiki Marriott Hotel, featuring George Kuo, Aaron Mahi,Martin Pahinui, and Bobby Ingano. Check with the Marriott for other evenings as well. Sunday afternoons at Honey's, in the Ko`olau Golf Club, featuring Mike Ka`awa, Paul Kim, Ocean Kaowili, Analu Aina, and sometimes legend Eddie Kamae. Check with the Honolulu Elks club for the same line up. Friday at Nico's on Pier 38 is an excellent lunchtime show, featuring Ramon Camarillo. At many of these shows, there's no telling what guests will turn up to sing, play, or dance hula. There are amazing musicians in every family in Hawai`i, not all make recordings. Any group you see jamming on the beach will probably have some players with awesome talent. There's a lot more that I have missed, partly due to poor memory, partly to lack of time to explore everything available.

Can also check poolside at the Princess Kaiulani Hotel. Starting this Thursday, Welo will be playing at the Ilikai every Thursday from 7-9. Kamaka Fernandez sometimes plays at Formaggios in Kailua and sometimes at Wahoos on Ward Ave. Check the schedule for The Edge at Sheraton Waikiki.

Don't forgeet that May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii. There's entertainment all day long at the bandshell in Kapiolani park, near the zoo. There's also choke food booths (haha), a lei making contest and goodie booths. As for me, I'll be on Maui at the Henry Allen Steel Guitar Festival at the Ka'anapali Beach Hotel celwbrating Lei Day there.

Mahalo Nui all you folks who posted suggestions. They are more than welcome because I am now on O'ahu in rain, rain and more rain - so musical events are having to take the place of snorkeling, hiking and other outdoor activities. So, for example, I got to see Kimo West at the Willows Thursday (my wife and I were most of the live audience) and today, at the International Marketplace, we saw Melveen Leed who was joined by Rodney Cazimero and Anne McCormack. Lots of fun and more to come.

So many, many thanks, folks!!

I'm always amazed that snorkeling and scuba diving trips get cancelled due to rain. You would not get wet otherwise, eh? Seriously, have fun and enjoy the shows. Wish I were there, rain or not.

In WA state, swimming in the rain is not uncommon. Doing anything in the rain is not uncommon.

Yeah, but Mark lives in the beautiful rain-shadow region.

Well, we got back to Seattle at 6:00 this morning. I have now today (10 min. before PakeleLive starts) experienced more sun than there was on O'ahu this entire past week!! Oh well - such is karma.

If I can figure out how to contact Melveen Leed to ask her permission, I will post on YouTube a number of her pieces that she did at the International Marketplace last week. Including a medley of pieces from "Hawaii Calls" days and, with Rodney Cazimero, a beautiful rendition of "I'll Remember You" that brought tears to my eyes. (Any thoughts on how to email her would help.)

Another interesting item that came out of this trip was at the Polynesian Cultural Center where I attended a half hour presentation at the Hawaiian section. In the course of this, I heard about how speaking Hawaiian was prohibited and kids who spoke it in schools were punished. And since there was no written language, this tended to destroy the Hawaiian culture. If Dr. Kenneth Conklin (referred to in Bau's posting of 2/22/11) was right, then this is a myth that is being quite widely and publicly perpetrated. I intend to send PCC the reference.

So, all in all, it was an interesting albeit moist trip. We hope to go back. Thanks, once more for your help.

I'd love to find out as well. The e-mail address I had for her is no longer active, and I have a friend who has had a question for her for some time, about a rare recording of her that he located.

Welcome back, Mark. That explains the sunshine we got today - it came back with you.

Melveen is on facebook. Perhaps you can try contacting her that way.
