Just saw he is no longer with Barry in Hapa. Anyone know why? Saw them last year in Chicago and it was amazing. Their version of Redemption Song that night was the greatest tune I have ever seen live.

We can all speculate -- but the only one who knows, is Nathan himself.
Life on the road can be grueling -- and music partnerships tend to dissolve eventually. Makaha Sons of Niihau...Peter Moon Band...Pilioha...Alea...Hawaiian Style Band...and the original Hapa, too (Kelii Kanealii & Barry).
I expect we'll be seeing a lot of Nathan solo -- and that's a real treat!! |

Last I talked with him about it (back in January), he said he has seen an increase in opportunities for him to follow his solo career once again, and he felt it was a prime time to pursue those. So Auntie Maria is right - we should be seeing more of the treat that is his solo performance. |

Yep - and I respect that here and now, just as I did at that time. I'm sure everyone else will, too. |

Musicians grow just like everyone else and no two grow the same way. If everybody played guitar, who'd play ukulele (or steel or bass)? |

Nathan. He'd play 'em all. Scary good, that dude. |

It was totally amicable and they are still good friends.
I had the opportunity to see Nathan last night and he confirmed what you have said. He mentioned that he and Barry had recently called each other to wish each other happy birthday, as their birthdays fall close together.
He did (graciously) decline to sing Barry's composition "Lei Pikake" when this was requested by an audience member, but he treated us to so much other fine music that no one missed it. I'm really pleased to see this fine musician starting out on this solo phase of his career. |

Nathan displays the greatest all-around musicanship I've seen just about anywhere. And his VOICE--stunning. It has balance, power, subtlety and beauty. Add that to his phenomenal skill on the bass (seems it is a 6 or 7 string?!), 12-string guitar, and probably a few others!
So glad we saw most of the Hapa tours in recent years. A favorite was with Charles on vocals, and the combinations of soulful chant, harmonies and drum...which with Nathan and Barry's different forms of magic, it was powerful. Hope they keep coming back, with more of their friends and all the myriad ways to create music. |

Yes, Hapa has been a great inspiration for me to take up slack key guitar and to just enjoy Hawaiian music. Now I know how to quickly get back to the islands, even though I'm on the mainland. I found Barry's guitar to be very innovative, much like I and so many other teenagers found Eddie Van Halen back in the '80's. And Hapa's music is just phenominal, whether it was Nathan or Keli'i singing. I hope the new Hapa and Nathan produce more good music in the near future. |

I saw Barry and Ron Kuala'au play in Spokane tonight and it was wonderful. I never got to see Hapa with Nathan Aweau but I can assume that Ron, a longtime friend of Barry's, now lets Barry take most of the spotlight with his quirky guitar antics as Ron's not the instrumentalist that Nathan is. But Ron has a warm and humble spirit that makes him an appealing personality on stage. As a tribute to the late Charles Ka'upu, they put Charles' photo on a chair draped with lei and they often played songs that Charles loved, like Iz' "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Danny Boy".
