A bill recognizing native Hawaiians as an indigenous people and self-governing has passed the Hawai'i legislature. It now goes to Governor Abercrombie for signature.
As you can imagine, this issue has been and continues to be controversial.

As a Native American, I can tell you that "self governing" is a mis-statement at best, and not all it's cracked up to be.
Independence, with all residents equal citizens, is a far loftier goal. The point of this bill is more about legitimitizing racism than giving "Hawaiians" rights. Speaking of which, who decides who is, and who is not, "Hawaiian"? The Bishop Estate (excuse me, KSBE), who determines who are, and who are not, "children of Hawai'i"?
I have two grandkids, born to the same mother, one of whom apparently is a child of Hawai'i and one who supposedly is not. Although the great grandparents of both of them (on my side) live on the same island, and the one who is "not" a child of Hawai'i can actually trace his family in Hawai'i back further than the one who "is". But the "child of Hawai'i"'s grandfather was called Hawaiian, while the other's great great grandfather was called Portugese. Who knows what the actual genetic mix was. Me, I just call it racism. |

We're all just people. Treat us fairly, let us feel wanted, needed, and appreciated. Laws can't do that. |
