This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re hosting SEVEN TIME 2011 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee Mark Yamanaka! Opening for Mark is the Byrds, a group from Japan that regular viewers may remember from several prior appearances.
Mark began playing music while attending intermediate school in Hilo, beginning with the ‘ukulele and later teaching himself guitar. Soon thereafter, he discovered a talent for singing soaring falsettos. Although not of Hawaiian blood, he identifies strongly with the culture and music of the land of his birth. His dedication to the preservation of Hawaiian music and culture was recognized by his well-known kumu hula, Johnny Lum Ho, when Mark began studying with him in 1997.
Although Mark is the first professional musician in his family, vocal talent runs deep – dating back several generations to his great-grandmother, who sang for her church. Surrounded by song from an early age, he learned to appreciate both the music of Hawai’i and of the world. Major influences include Johnny Lum Ho, Gary Haleamau and Dennis Pavao, as well as Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Peabo Bryson and Mariah Carey.
For his debut album “Lei Pua Kenikeni,” Mark assembled a varied collection of favorite songs that showcase the depth of his talent, including some written by his mentor Johnny Lum Ho, one reaching back to the hymn-singing roots of his grandmother, one country favorite, and one Mark wrote for his daughter. The album is nominated in seven categories for this year’s Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, which take place Sunday May 29.
The Japanese group the Byrds are a Hawaiian music group and halau from the Akasaka area of Tokyo. Under Sensei Kimiko Ota, they have their own club called “Birdland,” where a number of musicians visiting from Hawai’i play.
Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, May 26 from 6:30-8:30pm HST at the Willows Restaurant (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). Those who are unable to attend can watch the live stream at www.pakelelive.com. (The shows will also be edited for television and shown at a later date on OC16 TV and www.oc16.tv)
Admission is free, no reservations are required and all ages are welcome! Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 5:30.) Yeah. I think I'm going to take a nap and try to stay awake for this one, too. This guy is amazing.
(I already got my copy of the CD. If it were an LP, it would be worn out by now.) |

One of the best CDs from this last year, without a doubt. |
"The music of the Hawaiians, the most fascinating in the world, is still in my ears and haunts me sleeping and waking." Mark Twain |

Hope to make it tonight but fading fast. Shoot! Should have made time for a nap.
The live stream used to work in Microsoft Media Player or Quicktime. Is it only in Adobe flash now? No flash on the iPad. |
