Ha’ena Beach is one of the most scenic and least-visited beaches in lower Puna: a small but beautiful white sand cove sheltered by a reef of Pahoehoe on a coastline dominated by rugged black lava cliffs and spectacular crashing waves. Inland from the cove are the traditionally styled W.H. Shipman homes and a large fresh water pond that now serves as a refuge for the endangered nene geese. The water is exceptionally clear and it is possible to see bubbling springs of fresh water coming up through the sand along the shore. during low tide. In its natural landscape area is covered with native plants used for hula and groves of hala (pandanus) used for weaving.

Aloha and mahalo to everyone who attended this first He Huaka'i E Pana Na I Ke Ea this year. I had a wonderful time and have never had such an inspiring experience than this. Kekuhi and Piilani was so good and the music the best. Most amazing to me was finding out Hole'i was from Pele and Hi'iaka chant.

See you all agin in December one.
