Here's a bit about who the Abrigo `Ohana is: Timi, Emily and Quinn. Oh I LOOOVE these kids.

This band was formed in 2005 when seven year old Emily picked up the bass guitar to play along with her big brother Timi. At the age of ten, Timi became the head of the band holding the lead instrument, ukulele, and the lead vocal. Three year old Quinn handled percussion for the group. Like magic, their little band was born.
Today, they have immersed themselves into traditional Hawaiian music including ki ho'alu (slack key guitar), the vocal style of falsetto, ukulele, pakini bass, and Hawaiian steel guitar. Focusing on the greats of Hawaiian music, they bring the old style back into the limelight. Together, these three young children face the future with the hope of perpetuating the music their ancestors left behind for them. They are the future of Hawaiian music.

And here's a bit about Ke Kani Nahe. Just remember a few short years ago when Duke, after lurking for some time, came on TaroPatch and told us that he had great difficulty finding people to jam old style Hawaiian music with? Right there in Kalihi?? Well, thanks to Lanet Abrigo taking the bull by the horn and organizing some kanikapila, and thanks to Duke and Sam's You Tube videos, Duke, Derek, Shawn and Sam came together and collectively they are something else!

Here is their bio:
Derek Higa – Vocals/12 String Rhythm Guitar Duke Domingo – Vocals/Kiho’alu
Shawn Machida – Lead Guitar Sam Sang – Vocals/Bass Guitar

Bio:

Ke Kani Nahe came together as a result of many kanikapila sessions with friends and family and the more they played together, the more they started to click with one another. Their styles seemed to complement each other and more importantly they all shared the same love for traditional Hawaiian music and kiho’alu. So after some talking, they decided to get together formally and Ke Kani Nahe was born.

Individually they come from different facets of Hawaiian music. Derek comes from a hula background. As a former dancer and musician with a hula halau, Derek brings to the group music based on hula stylings and good ole chalangalang playing with a little bit of falsetto thrown in the mix.

Duke is a long time kiho’alu musician who got his start by listening to the great kiho’alu artists of the past and just learning by ear. As time passed, he met Ozzie Kotani and studied under him and became very proficient in the art. One of his goals is to perpetuate the art of traditional kiho’alu and as such has been giving lessons to those that have a drive to learn and all manuahi (free).

Shawn has a background in all types of music from rock to reggae but has come back to the music he has always loved. You might recognize his last name (Machida) as his uncle Al is one of the great Hawaiian guitarists of our time and former member of the Kahauanu Lake Trio. As the lead guitarist, Shawn brings to the table subtle background fills and hot Hawaiian pa’ani.

Sam is the bass player of the group but is an excellent ukulele player in his own right. Sam grew up listening to and learning traditional Hawaiian music from his father. But for the last 10 years he strayed from his roots and mainly played reggae/contemporary music with various groups. He recently has come full circle and back to his roots where he is once again enjoying traditional Hawaiian music.

Ke Kani Nahe’s music comes from the heart and they hope to share the beauty of traditional Hawaiian music with whoever will listen. Whether it’s for friends and family, seniors at a local retirement home or giving their time to support local charities, they just love to jam.

Side note: One project that Ke Kani Nahe likes to mention is that along with the Abrigo Ohana, they organize a traditional Hawaiian kanikapila every third Sunday of the month over at Waimea Valley at the Pikake Pavilion. It runs from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and is free and open to the public. If anyone wants more info on this event they can go to the Ke Kani Nahe website at kekaninahe.com and send them a message with any questions.
