Monday -
Camp got off to a great start with a before-dinner mai tai party. All of us happy campers chatting away under the big white tent. We had so much fun that we didnʻt even realize that it had started raining. We scurried off to dinner and watched a double hulled Hawaiian sailing vessel pass as we enjoyed the sunset hour.

When we regrouped for the opening ceremony, it was raining a bit harder. "It almost never rains in Keauhou," we were told by Rolinda Bean (the cultural director of KBR), "but the fact that it is raining on your first night here at Camp is a real blessing! You will notice that all of us who live here are smiling ear to ear because this is such a blessing."

Keola introduced all the kumu, and Dennis Kamakahi told us that the rain was the way his ʻaumakua were welcoming him back to the island when he arrived. Dennis Lake and Keola told a story about an interview they did for NPR last week. They were talking about Aunty Nona Beamer, and Dennis started getting tears in his eyes. Keola did too, and then the person from NPR burst into tears! We all miss her...

After we finished the opening ceremony, I was approached by several campers asking, "Where can we set up and play some music?" I told them to set up right in the lobby and have at it!

By the way, it is bright and sunny this morning, and sparkly-fresh from the tropical rain.
It is going to be a great week!

Aloha,
-Konabob

Ah, man I can picture exactly how it is. I wish I was back there - ah well, maybe one day.

Yes, I've been told about rain being a 'blessing'. Hm. I seem to get blessed quite a lot, where I live.

Thanks for the update, Bob! Keep them coming. Give my regards to everyone - I'm with you in spirit!

Yours, enviously,

Trev
