This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re celebrating the return of the popular young Hawaiian group The Abrigo Ohana – and the release of their new album ‘Ekahi! Joining the Abrigos are first-time guests Ke Kani Nahe.

The Abrigo Ohana was formed in 2005 when then seven year old Emily picked up the bass guitar to play along with her big brother Timi, age 10. Timi became the head of the band, playing the lead instrument (‘ukulele) and singing the lead vocals. Three year old Quinn played percussion.

Since then, Timi (now age 16), Emily (age 13) and Quinn (age 8) have immersed themselves into traditional Hawaiian music, learning to play ki ho'alu (slack key guitar), ‘ukulele, pakini bass, Hawaiian steel guitar, and sing in the vocal style of falsetto. Along the way, they’ve been mentored by some of the greats, including Ledward Kaapana and the late Uncle Ronald Kanahele. With a focus on many of the masters of traditional Hawaiian music, they bring the old style back into the limelight. Together, these three young children look toward the future with the hope of perpetuating the music their ancestors left behind for them.

Ke Kani Nahe (Derek Higa, Duke Domingo and Sam Sang – member Shawn Machida is currently out of the country) came together as a result of many kani ka pila sessions with friends and family. Their styles complemented each other and, more importantly, they shared the same love of traditional Hawaiian music and ki ho’alu – thus, Ke Kani Nahe was born.

Individually they come from different facets of Hawaiian music. Derek comes from a hula background. As a former dancer and musician with a hula halau, Derek brings to the group music based on hula stylings and good ‘ole “cha-lang-a-lang” playing, with a little bit of falsetto thrown in the mix. Duke is a long time ki ho’alu musician who got his start by listening to the great ki ho’alu artists of the past and learning to play by ear. He later studied under Ozzie Kotani, becoming very proficient in the art. Sam is the bass player of the group, but is an excellent ‘ukulele player in his own right. He grew up listening to and learning traditional Hawaiian music from his father, but he strayed from that for about 10 years and mainly played reggae/contemporary music. He recently returned to his roots where he is once again enjoying traditional Hawaiian music.

Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, June 30 from 6:30-8:30pm HST at the Willows Restaurant (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). Those who are unable to attend can watch the live stream at www.pakelelive.com. (The show will also be edited for television and shown at a later date on OC16 TV and www.oc16.tv)

Admission is free, no reservations are required and all ages are welcome! Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 5:30.) Oh my Duke, Derek, Sam & Timi all sounded so very good didn't they. You know I was here with my box of kleenex. Had to cry. I was so proud of them! And I don't think Dukie really uses turtle wax ontop that sweet bolo head.

Now I am waiting for the Abrigo `Ohana to come on. That Willows commercial going make me go crazy already if they don't hurry up with the music. How many times I gotta look at the food.

The Abrigo `Ohana were indeed great. Emily's voice is stupendous for one so young (13 yrs. old). Did you hear her on `Alika? Wow. Timi's skill on any instrument you put in front of him is amazing. And Quinn, oh he puts such a smile on my face.

OK, 3:30 a.m. I am going to bed. I sure need my beauty sleep.
