Aloha everybody, I'd like to re-open this conversation for the purpose of finding out where all you guys learned the lame songs. The main references quoted ar Mark Hansons's book and, evidently, Ozzie's book. Where and/or how do I get one or both of those. And another topic had lots of discussion about another book put out by a member that sounde like a great resource as well. I am soaking up a new song about every 2 weeks, and will soon be held down for knee surgery that will increase my playing time from miniutes to hours per day, so i want a lot of stuff to look at. Will appreciate any help here. Mahalo |

OK, so I ordered Ozzie and Mark. Now, what about the book under discussion a month or so ago, where a member was perhaps going to put together a book of his own and if 20 people wanted one, he would do it. Does that ring a bell with anyone? |

Yep, that was Mika`ele McLellan and he actually already has a book...the discussion was about putting together a CD of the songs in the book. |

As far as I know he is going to work on the CD as he has the time. |

Craig, Thanks. Is the book available anywhere, and what ever became of the CD proposition?

Nice suggestion for the lists. I'll have to go back to the house and get the name of the songs I know. I'm not real good with all those Hawaiian names in my head. Stand-by. -slkho |

Ok, I'm back. I am just horrible with memory retention, so learning a song is a slow arduous process for me. Still, I stick to it however. I think I suffer from CRS, (can't remember s...!)
Songs I know in my little head: Ozzie's: Mauna Loa Kani Ki Ho' Alu Manuela Boy Hi Ilawe Molehu Pau Uka (sic)
Led's: Hi Ki Wale
Sonny's Mahina's Trot
Spanish Fandango (Keith taught me a long time ago).
Ronald Loo: Pauoa Liko Ka Lehua
Working on (off & on when I can):
Hui Ohana's Slack Key (tab from Ozzie) Maori Brown Eyes (ozzies tab) Keoki's video Ku U Ipo Onaona (ozzies tab)
The Holy Grail songs I would love to learn, hopefully one day soon: Radio Hula (Led's tab) Justin's Lullabye (Barry Flanigan's tabbed version)

Aloha all...just got back from Arizona...dug the 78degree weather...Anyway been busy memorizing a few sets of songs for a trio I now play out with...fun stuff 60's - 70's acoustic stuff. As far as my slack key..I'm still one year new at it...so far I'm doing...Kani Ki Hoalu---Ozzie Manuela Boy---Ozzie Molehu--Ozzie Kolowaka--Keola I do a few of these between our set and always people come up later and ask about the songs and or comment how sweet they sound.I keep my Guild tuned to taro patch to pick up and play during a gig. I am learning these slowly but can't wait to know a dozen or so and play them out more. Now starting Awiwi...just pushin through Ozzies book...lovin it!....Aloha...Ken. |

Aloha OHIO-HAOLE,
Since you're well into Ozzie, contact CPATCH and see if you can still purchase (for a donation to the charity) a copy of the CD the Craig did for Ozzie's seminar in LA last year. It's classic Ozzie instruction with lots of interesting new playing patterns, although a bit noisy since it was done 1 camera live. There are several "learnable" tunes there and it is a logical next step from his first book. Comes with tab. Worth the $30. |

Actually, I only had permission from Ozzie to sell a few copies of that locally. Let me email him and find out if I can make it generally available and then I'll post more information here if it's OK with him. (I know he's a little self-conscious about material getting out that isn't polished.) |
