aloha e pete,
i'm in coastal san diego (with our famous june gloom :-(
i wonder if you might find someone poking around whittier college? they seem to have an active hawaiian music community around there, and when beamer was playing there, there were a lot of people in the audience who wanted to know how he tuned his guitar.

Last Fall I gave a slack key workshop at Shade Tree Music in Laguna Nigel that was very well attended. Maybe 20 people?
(BTW - I'll likely be doing another one next September.)
Margie Mirkin, Shade Tree's owner, took and distributed a mailing list .
Dusty Foster, who's part of Taro Patch net, was one of the attendees. I'd suggest contacting Margie and Dusty to see if they have the contact info.
You might check in with McCabe's and the Clairmont folk music store (forgive my feeble old brain, the name escapes me.) Both have hosted slack key workshops recently.
It could be that there is an ongoing group somewhere in the great expanse of sun, sand, palm trees.... and freeways.
Happy playing,
Mark (a So Cal native who now lives in the land of the pine tree)

I have a list of people that have expressed some interest in slack key in the Orange and San Diego county areas. Email me for the list.
The Summer Solstice Folk Music Festival takes place 6/21 - 6/23 at Soka University in Calabasas. Jim Belof is offering ukulele workshops. There isn't any slack key scheduled but there is nothing to prevent a few (or a lot) of us from holding our own jam. I'll be there. Just listen for the sweet strains of Ki Ho'alu. http://www.ctms-folkmusic.org/festival/index.html

aloha all,
on saturdays at 3pm in encinitas a group of us get together to play hawaiian music. most people play the ukulele but we do have the occasional guitar player sit in (i sometimes bring mine). we're a motley but happy crew. george hoshide is the guy who pulls us all together.
if you wish to come by and try some slack key, let me know and i'll be sure to bring my guitar.
we play at kealani's, http://sandiego.citysearch.com/profile/93055.
a hui hou, keith
