New Year's Wishes to all of you!

Anybody make any music oriented resolutions?
I still make some - and usually keep them for a couple of weeks - better that than nothing.

For me, I'm promising myself tht I'm going to take one song each practice session and spend at least 10 minutes working on tone and tonal color.
Listening to the classical guys play - they can make even very simple passages open up by varying their tonal color - makes me want to incorporate some of that in my playing.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Aloha Kakou! Hau'oli Makahiki Hou!
I resolve to share aloha with everyone I can, through music and otherwise. I also want to share some Hawaiian culture with my two young sons.
Musically, I hope to learn to play only the 'ono bits and leave out the pupuka parts. I want to learn a few Samoan songs to sing with my island friends.
That's all. Mahalo for a wonderful year reading the forum here at Taropatch.net. So many nice people here make it a great experience.

My resolution got off to a great start. It actually started a month back: at least an hour a day working on that insane alternating bass. (It's coming along nicely for a flat picker, thanks to the inspiration of Keoki Kahumoku's DVD). And yesterday, my two sons and I sat there for an afternoon just jamming. (They can finger pick). Yay, that's what it's all about, right?

Best wishes for the new year to all you taropatchers.

You're not trying to use a flatpick in slack key are you? Almost as bad as my attempt to fingerpick Greek style bouzuki.

BTW, Homespun has a DVD by Traum on how to "free up the thumb" for alternating bass. Not too bad if you actually do the excercises.

Hi Raymond,

The flatpick feels soooo comfortable! But no, I'm persevering and I have the blisters to prove it. (Just kidding - I'm using a thumb pick). Keoki's DVD makes it all look so simple. After intensely watching what he was doing, I realized I could sit there for hours looking at the soccer on TV without having to listen to the inane announcers - I'd just hear myself going something like 5-2-4-1-6-2-4-1 for a whole match (other than when there's a goal, of course - then I'd really mess up.) It's having an excellent effect. One day, I'll really be able to do this, once this bass thing comes naturally.

A happy and healthy new year to all of you!

About all I can resolve to do this year is to keep practicing and going to my weekend lessons since I'm going to school in the evenings & Saturdays (in addition to working). Last year I resolved to learn one new song each month, but that didn't turn out to be very realistic. This year, I'd also like to go to some slack key events, meet some slack key players on Oahu, and maybe improve enough to be able to kanakapila instead of just watch.

Cheers
Tim

First, and foremost, I resolve to get my health together in time for George Kahumoku's camp in June! I am well on my way, have good doctors, and just have to keep my head up and my hands busy! So I practice a lot.

Second, I want to build myself another 40 walkingstick bass's - nicer than any I have made in the past, so I can spend the summer demoing them at musical events around Hawaii, and maybe on the west coast.

Third, Don Kauli'a has moved to Kona! I can't wait to meet you and play some music. I absolutely love your new CD "Slack Key...In the Key of Aloha". I hope you will let the other Taro Patch folk know where to buy it. I resolve to learn Holo Holo Ka'a on my steel, in your key by Jan. 11th.

Finally, I have resolved not to care how my hair grows back after chemo. My neighbors tell me that the "Ghandi look" works for me.

It's the year of the Monkey. Okay, I wanna learn to swing!
Aloha,
-Konabob

Jesse, I am hoping to attend George Kahumoku's workshop in June, and I plan to bring a couple basses with me in case anyone wants to try their hand at slack key bass. It's sooo easy to play (just 3 strings, and no 'chords' to learn...)
