Curious how many of you are playing slack key with a 12-string guitar...I know Cyril Pahinui and George Kahumoku, Jr. do at least part of the time...
Also - please pardon the new guy question...do the strings wear out faster by changing the tuning often? Since I've always been a standard tuning player, I've never even tried changing the tuning until now - curious what your expereinces have been.
Ledward Kaapana has also been known to play a 12 string too. Not sure if changing tunings often will have any effect on tone but changing frequently can lead to string breakage. I have been raising or lowering my 3rd string many times and *snap*. That's been my experience but still my strings last quite a while.
Aloha! When changing tunings often, Steve Grimes suggests at least one extra wrap 'round the capstan for the smaller gauge strings to avoid breakage there. Also, make sure the strings aren't hanging up on the nut-- you can lubricate the nut channels with the graphite from rubbing a pencil before you put on your strings. I'd played 12 string first time recently, and as soon as somebody wants to give me one, I'll play it lots. People have come up with funny combinations of strings for ki ho'alu on the 12 (reversing the doubling of the bass strings, other gauge combinations...). E kala mai ma TaroPatch!
