We're having an open mic house concert/jam/guitar party/kanikapila at my house in Walnut Creek, CA on Saturday, July 13th, 1 PM. Please bring yourself and your favorite guitar(s), we'll provide the refreshments.
This invitations is going to the Yahoo email group, SFBayAcousticGuitar and to the 13th Fret discussion group, so most of the folks attending are not Hawaiian music players, but if enough of us show up we can have a corner to ourselves and spend all day jamming on "Manuela Boy."
Please e-mail me at fguidry @ yahoo.com so I can get an idea of the head count. I'll reply with directions.

Hello All! I just joined this super group. I'm 64 and as a child heard "Manuela Boy" many times back in the very early '40s. I've been searching for the lyrics and found an earlier posting to this site through Google on 5/12/02. I can see there are MANY versions and those I read are no doubt more contemporary. Maybe some old timer on here can remember MY version which was pretty plain and short and of course I am missing some of the lines. Heck, I was only 3! "Manuela Boy, my dear boy, you no mo' hila hila. I think so you no likee me no more. then... Papa works in the taro patch, Mama makes the poi. Brother (does something which I can't remember but for some reason I think it had something to do with the WWII war effort) and "Sister goes with a Malahini boy". Well - you golden oldies - anybody know the rest of this old version? The blasted tune has gone 'round and 'round in my head all morning - you know how that is!

Well, we didn't do "Manuela Boy" at the guitar get together, but I tried to stick a little ki ho`alu into any situation I could. You can see pics of the event at:

Hi Fran,
What a great time you all had playing those beautiful guitars. Even the harp guitar was gorgeous and usually they just look feaky. Thanks for all the photos and a chance to match face, or at least top of head to so many familiar names. I'm looking forward to hearing the music.

So, Fran, Lance cleaned up his act? The pic shows him drinking Coke. Must be Dawn's good influence. And, did you get Manoa native Kevin to play any slack key, or did he stick with Chet stuff?
Must have been a great time.

Kevin is so cool, he played Chet doing a Hawaiian song. It was gorgeous, and we got it on the minidisc.
He also has worked on a little Beamer, but his heart is definitely with Chet.
