Not a new member, but the first one.
So what is a kid who was born and raised on the east coast doing running a slack key web site? Dates back to 1993, on the island of Kaua`i when I saw a ki ho`alu documentary on TV. Well, sort of. I was really interested but not close enough to it geographically so I temporarily forgot about it for a while. I should also credit my wife whom I started dating in 1993 for getting me into this music. She was born and raised on O`ahu. So yes, to those who think that I am from Hawai`i, I am... by marriage!
In 1995, I read about the Boston Hawaiian Slack Key Festival one day too late! I could not believe it! So come 1996, I made sure that I did not miss it. My first Hawaiian music show was Uncle Raymond Kane, George Kahumoku, Jr. and Keola Beamer. That was it. I was hooked.
Many shows later, I decided to create a website dedicated to slack key and to list resources available for learning slack key. My original idea came in 1999; but as some of you know, I am a procrastinator. As luck would have it, by 2002, technology became inexpensive enough and readily available resulting in even bigger and better things than I originally imagined. Today, instead of having a static list, we have a live community - an online `ohana!
Very cool. I am fortunate to have connected with so many incredible people through slack key music and this website. This once pseudo-punk rock/hardcore guitarist (in college) has made a dramatic shift to searching for that nahenahe sound.
Well, that's the short version of the story. Mahalo to all those who fill this place with aloha. Starting this site was easy, but those who enthusiastically support it, make it great.

Aloha mai e Andy, We are but fish in the sea, and sooner or later those of us who are wont to get caught by da ki ho'alu thro-net and end up in the hukilau. I don't tell many people, but I share the challange of being born in New Jersey. But here we are. Na kanaka hau'oli. Bless you for your efforts. This patch is really needed. Maybe sometimes we can use some weeding (meaning my over-chatty contributions), but we are the oha stuck in the mud, relating with each other, basking in the sun and fulfilling our ultimate purpose. Good ting, yeah? I didn't realize we are so young (I figgahed I came on years aftah you guys started). I guess we're precocious. As I say in my nursery school, "Two year-olds know it all, they just lack access to tools...". Hau'oli la hanau! |

As long as we're making da kine confessions - I was born and raised in Oakhurst, NJ. There, I've said it. Is there some 12-step program available?

I'm new here, but have been interested in Slack Key for a while. I spend my summers in Tahiti and the local boys play a type of slack key but my first real experience was hearing Keola Beamer in concert on Catalina Island in 1996. Not a bad way to start. Over the years I collected several slack key cd's but did not start playing until a couple of years ago when I attended a George Kahumoku, Jr. slack key class at my local guitar shop. I enjoy Slack Key because it is so relaxing, but I spend most of my time playing classic rock and have learned only two Taro Patch songs. My wife is supportive and loves slack key, so there is motivation to learn more. Happy Sunsets. |

I play Mark Hason's arrangements of La Paloma (well enough for friends and family) and Moe 'Uhane (Dream Slack Key)(still under construction). |
