I'm new here, but have been interested in Slack Key for a while. I spend my summers in Tahiti and the local boys play a type of slack key but my first real experience was hearing Keola Beamer in concert on Catalina Island in 1996. Not a bad way to start. Over the years I collected several slack key cd's but did not start playing until a couple of years ago when I attended a George Kahumoku, Jr. slack key class at my local guitar shop. I enjoy Slack Key because it is so relaxing, but I spend most of my time playing classic rock and have learned only two Taro Patch songs. My wife is supportive and loves slack key, so there is motivation to learn more. Happy Sunsets.

Welcome to the `ohana Jack! You're not the only one here who combines classic rock and slack key...maybe we need to come up with a new category of music: Classic Slack. We could play slack key arrangements of classic rock songs.

Craig
My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Led Zepplin's "Goin to California" was recorded in Taro Patch, but I think the limeys call it open G.

Craig,
That hybrid would mo betta be called classic slock, or clock-slack, slackassic rock, rockassic slack, classocklack, or, in my case, Jurassic slack (as in 'the jury's still out as to whether this old duffer can play anything at all")
I have been trying to fit a few songs into the slack key moce and have come up short so far. Have you had any luck?
Karl
Frozen North (minus 20 and snowing today..."When It's Springtime In Alaska, It's Forty Below" Ten points for the singer of that old tune)

Not classic rock per se but I worked up the Beatles' Blackbird into open G and a friend developed a nice arrangement that included some slack key ornamentation.

And take your pick: Johnny Horton, Hank Snow, or Johnny Cash (w/June Carter).

I'd like to see that Blackbird arrangement, sounds cool. Any way to get it to me?
