There's a great CD called "Slack Key Traditions - Liko Hawaiian Folk Collection Vol 2" (don't know what happened to Vol 1) that was released in 1995 and can be difficult to find. For more info on this CD, check out Mele.com http://www.mele.com/v3/info/257.htm

While shopping in Hilo, I found a store that has a whole box of them, along with a bunch of other OOP CDs. The store is run by the Makua family...apparently Nelson Makua designed most of the cover artwork for Liko productions, and in exchange was given a lot of the CDs to sell. Since Na Makua are mostly known for their clothing, they still have a lot of the CDs including this one, several by Gary Haleamau, and others.

Here's their website: http://www.namakua.com/ The CDs are NOT listed on the site, but contact info is, so you can call and ask about the CDs. He was asking $12 per CD. Plus, they have a lot of beautiful clothing, so check it out! Or, maybe Auntie Maria will call him and buy all the CDs for Mele.com

And BTW - Nelson designed this year's (and last year's) Merrie Monarch posters. They are awesome, also for sale ($5, $10 if signed), and also not listed on the website

Aloha e Eric,

Thanks for the tip! "Slack Key Tradition" is one of my all-time favorite slack key CDs. We're lucky to already have it. It's a wonderful collection in the Big Island style. I never discovered a Vol 1, either, though if anyone does, let me know.

And yeah, Nelson Makua and 'ohana have been around a loooong time in the designing business. *Very* talented people.

aloha,
Sarah

Hooray! I'm calling Nelson tomorrow!!

FYI -- Nelson did the graphics for Dancing Cat's albums, and won Na Hoku Hanohano Awards for his artwork on these two:
