I was unpleasantly surprised to receive the following email today:quote: Subject: Email account utilization warning.
Dear user of "Taropatch.net" mailing system,
We warn you about some attacks on your e-mail account. Your computer may contain viruses, in order to keep your computer and e-mail account safe, please, follow the instructions.
Pay attention on attached file.
Have a good day, The Taropatch.net team
Please be advised that this is a bogus email. Anyone else receive this? It is totally false. The virus is trying to get you to click the attachment which will infect your computer and perpetuate the virus.
I have scanned my computers and all are virus free. Since many viruses spoof email addresses found in the infected PC's address book, you cannot tell where the virus is coming from. I urge you to scan your computers regularly. If you do not have updated virus software, you can do a free scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com
If anyone has any additional info, please post here or email me. I would also say to be extremely weary of any emails with suspicious attachments (.zip, .pif, etc.)
Somedays, I wish I had a Mac.

My company has rec'd this also, similar except that my company name was in the email instead of 'Taropatch.net'.
People can also get free on-line virus checks at the Norton website: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ as well as virus removal tools, info about viruses/worms, and about hoaxes.
