Aloha!! I don't know if this has been posted, but I discovered a streaming concert of Unco Led and Cyril on Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour. The concert includes interviews, is intended to be from the artists perspective, and is well over an hour long. What a great resource this is. To find the Hawaiians scroll down to #168. Unfortunately they do not have this concert on video as many other are, but it's delightful just as well. Led opens with his chickenskin "I Kona'. Cyril opens with "Hula O Makee", with his wonderful 12 string.
I also play five string banjo, and have been feasting on J.D. Crowe, Del McCoury ... However, the scope of this library of performances is wide and should have something for everyone. I intend to watch some Tommy Emmanuel when I have time. Check it out! http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp
Lastly, a heads-up!! The Merrie Monarch Festival will be streaming again this year, and will again be hosted by the Hawai'i Channel and KITV. Miss Aloha Hula will start coverage on Thursday, April 15, and coverage ends on Saturday. I've watched for years now, and would not miss one second. With a six hour time difference on the East Coast, it does take some planning, but there are few things in this world as stunning. Best of luck to Kumu Hula Sonny Ching an Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uananhulu, and all the other Halau and talented haumana.

Stacey,
You are so right. Chicken skin don't even cover it. I had tears in my eyes after I heard Led come on in Nashville.
What a piece! I could just imagine all those mid-western folk watching this!
All hail Kiho'alu !

I'm glad the link to woodsongs was enjoyed by some, and I hope those interested will put in Favorites and explore other music listed. This site does have a feeling of preservation and duty to recongnize music overlooked by mainstream culture, which is often the music with greatest value. With slack key artists placing such effort in performing on the mainland, growth and exposure will happen. Great music will not be denied. Hopefully we will live to see the day when tourists request good Hawaiian music when they come to visit.
Also, a last reminder that tonight starts the Merrie Monarch. You know, it's worth watching for the music as well as dance. The musicians and singers always unheralded, and perform in modesty regardless of their stature. But, if you listen you'll hear the Makaha Sons, Kekuhi Kanahele, Darren Benitez, Amy Hanaial'i G ... with never a mention of their contrubution. Tonight Miss Aloha Hula, with last years winner Jennifer Oyama performing her farewell. It starts at 6pm Hawaiian.

Natasha Mahealani Akau from Halau Na Mamo O Pu'uanahulu wins Miss Aloha Hula. For any who missed watching, the Hawai'i Channel should provide video of this performance, as well as following kahiko and auana events. Creadit also goes to all of the other young ladies performing. A beautiful night. Jennifer Oyama danced a remarkable farewell, holding the title for 2003. |

Thanks for the link (again this year) David. Last night I could not stay up since I'm kicking a cold.
I watched a bit of the beginning and fell asleep. Is the image larger this year than last? I cannot get a full screen but it's not bad. |

Your welcome Andy. I was up till 5:30am and chatting with a Kumu Ching kupuna the whole time. She was beside herself when Natasha won! Today I was a zombie but it was certainly worth it, and sleep from dinner till midnight. Bandwidth has been increased this year, and the video looks great! There is a "full Window" button on the player, but it's not realy full screen. |

It's now 6:15am DST, and the Festival is pau. While waiting for the scores to be submitted Kealoha Kalama sang and jammed, with Kumu Hula Frank Hewitt dancing. Half the audience was singing and dancing! Some fun! The Governor presented Aunty Dottie Thompson with an award and recognition for her role in helping this Festival to evolve into it's present stature.
Now the awards! Kane Kahiko - Kumu Hula Brian Eselu Wahine Kahiko - Kumu Hulas Nani Lim Yap & Leialoha Amina
Kane Auana - Kumu Hula Carl Veto Baker!! They performed a tremendous hula depicting surfing! Wahine Auana - Kumu Hula Kau'e Kamanao
Kane Division First Overall - Kumu Hula Sonny Ching!! Get one Beeg Pa'u drum foah dis. Well Done!! He certainly looked delighted, especially after winning Miss Aloha Hula with Tasha.
Wahine Division First Overall - Kumu Hulas Nani Lim Yap & Leialoha Amina. They also win combined overall! Good for the Lim family!! You know that's Leialoha Lim Amina, and she's married to the incomparable Cousin Mel Amina who played guitar with Bruddah Iz. She is also the widow of Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole, and I believe a niece to Moe Keale. It's wonderful to see her get this recognition and her dancers were amazing. But certainly every halau and dancer are winners for participating!!
Hope I spelled all the names right. |

Wish I'd been able to stay awake to see the award presentations (ack! old age!)
Luckily, Bob taped it -- and the website for KITV-4 has some excellent details and photos: http://www.thehawaiichannel.com/hulafest

Bet you enjoy Aunty Maria. The award presentations were full of Aloha .. haumana singing to their Kumu from the audience, a variety of spontaneous acts born out of a feeling of goodwill. Had me smiling. |
