Thanks so much to the people who arranged to send me tickets to the festival. It was better than I could have thought. Watching live dancing to live music is always a treat and the competition was tremendous. my family took turns going to the festival or staying home and watching on television. I was amazed at the little old ladies with literally full gardens of flowers in their hair for the big evenings watching dancing. The dancers were superb, my favorite was the ancient hula style, just mesmerizing. thank you so much for making my trip so memorable. I hope to go again next year. I ended up going every night, even the first night of free exhibition dancing. The 11 inces of rain that day did not keep people away. The live musicians were fabulous and I had a great time listening to them, now I keep thinking I hear Hawaiin music here at home, alas , I don't really. Just wishful thinking. F. McQueen

Aloha Kasha, It was nice to hear that you had a chance to attend the Festival. It is one of Hawaiian's favorite nights because we can dress up and wear our fragrant flower leis. And as you noticed, our aunty's with their beautiful flowers in their hair. The place must have smelt awesome, huh? And the ua(rain) is just a blessing. It happens every year, usually with some sprinkle of lightening bolts. And, ah, yes...Hawaiian music is very nahenahe when you hear it live. I could be biased, but I feel Hawaiian music is the most relaxing and beautiful music in the world. Glad you had a nice time here in my Hawaii nei...A hui hou, Keali'i |

Aloha E Kasha,
Maybe you know this already, but every year the Merrie Monarch festival highlights are released on video, and this past year (2003) also on DVD. You can buy them online at various places - just do a search. http://www.hulasource.com/mermonvid.html is one good source.
Then like us, you can watch at home during the year, when you need your hula "fix"!
