That is one heckuva tour.
Oakdale Theatre in CT is a serious, in-the-round, big-star venue. That's where we saw Ray Charles and lots of other great musicians. Also, Ryman in N'ville is *THE* place for popular acoustic guitar in the US (along with a few places in Austin TX) - not just Country, either.
Does anyone know what Mraz is really like - couldn't get a clear idea from his web site? And the other guys?

The song of his that is getting big airplay right now on the rock/pop stations is "The Remedy". I don't really know for sure what the rest of his music is like, but iTunes lists his album notes as saying that "although young Jason Mraz's percussive acoustic guitar rhythms, tumbling verbiage, and funk/folk/jazz/pop concoctions may occasionally bear echoes of John Mayer and Dave Matthews, that's only one part of a bigger musical story ...." It also notes that the album personnel includes "Michael Andrews (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, banjo, ukulele)". If he's got `uke on his album and he's bringing Makana on his tour,I believe I am predisposed to think well of him!

Looks like CT has been eliminated on Makana's site, but not on Mraz's. Oh well...

Andy...what did you think of Makana...just saw him in Cleveland...He blew me away but his set was way too short! His true old style ki ho alu is to me beautifully smooth , but I didn't get enough of it. The original stuff he does in alternate tunings is great. I wish he would tour with someone like Kaki King...or better yet Headline a slack key concert himself! Anyway for the teaser it was ,I had a great musical experince...can't wait to see him again...and I love his latest album...the kid can sing too!...later Aloha....Ken. |

Hi Ken,
Sorry I never replied to this. I was holding off because I wanted to post my impressions along with my hour long Makana interview. Unfortunately, I encountered some technical difficulties (hard drive died and need to be reformatted.) I am a bit embarrassed to admit that it has taken me 6 months to find the time to retranscribe the audio from minidisc.
It's long. I hope that my assumption that the slack key crazed crowd here would want to read just about every word. I think there is some good stuff in there. Makana was super nice and spent a long time with me.
Keep an eye out. I plan to post this in the next few days... |
