Hello All,
I was wondering if someone can please help me in telling me who the artist and title of the song that is playing in the background of www.diamondheadroad.com
I have tried contacting the broker, and realty company, many many times, but they do not respond. I thought maybe I would inquire here.
I think it is such a beautiful song and it's driving me nuts trying to look for it on clips on tower records's website and mele.com's website and all. (Auntie Maria of Mele.com refferred me to here-- thanks Auntie!)
If anyone out there by chance would knows the song, please let me know! you can email me back at moneyjunkie @ yahoo.com thank you!!

Don't know the song, but I bet the reason you haven't heard back from the broker and realty company is that they're using it without permission! |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

When the first inquiry about the song came my way, I couldn't identify the song (or the slack key style), so I sent it on to various professional slack key players we all know.
As of today, all replies have been "don't know the song; don't recognize the player by the style".
So my guess is that this might be some _excellent_ amateur, noodling one of his/her own compositions exclusively for that website. |

That mele is simply entitled "Slack Key". It is performed by a group called "Ekolu" with Lukela Keala on 12-string kiho'alu. It appears on their debut album entitled "Down in the Valley" from 1999. Lukela is from Maui and started a group named "Valley Boys" in 1997 with my friend Ata Damasco. They have since gone their seperate ways. Lukela plays mainly reggae music with Ekolu while Ata has pursued a solo career in traditional Hawaiian music. |

Nice one leokiekie, I was searching my collection of kiho'alu recordings and I was stumped. I would have guessed uncle Cyril or my uncle George. I would never have guessed Lukela. It's too bad, yeah, that the Vally Boys did'nt stay together for more recordings. It seemed that they had potential to become in the class as, say Ho'opi'i Brother's, with their harmonious leo ki'eki'e. Akua has his plans for us all, I guess. I aloha leo ki'eki'e and I assume since your handle is leokiekie that you either sing or love it also. Do you have a group or just jam with the brada's, kine? We used to check out uncle Dennis Pavao all the time before he left. Uncle Led and Ned's falsetto is nuts, too. Cannot forget uncle George Helms, too. Yipes, can go on and on about leo ki'eki'e performers. That is my favorite subject. Even more than Kiho'alu,(even though that's good, too). A hui hou, Keali'i Kahumoku. |

You're welcome moneyjunkie. Taropatch.net is a great resource because you never know who's listening.........
huiohana, I loved the Valley Boys recording. It just struck me odd that Ata and Lukela did an album together. If you listen closely, you will notice that Lukela backs himself up vocally on his own tracks while Ataboy does the same. They have different styles of music so they do solo recordings and alternate them on the album. The soaring falsetto harmonies are all being done by Ataboy while backing himself up. It's interesting that it reminds you of the Ho'opi'i Brothers because Ata frequently plays with Uncle Likeke ever since Uncle Sol had his stroke a few years back.
Uncle Dennis Pavao is the person who started my passion for leoki'eki'e. His voice was clean and pure. He introduced me to other influences like George Ka'inapau, Bill Lincoln, George Helm, and Linda Delacruz. It is truly an artform just like kiho'alu. So many different styles. I play for Uncle Saichi Kawahara who leads the Kapalakiko Hawaiian Band based in San Francisco. Uncle Saichi took first place in the 1998 Kindy Sproat Falsetto Contest. I have been studying under him for 7 years. Your Uncle George wrote a song for Uncle Saichi entitled "Na Pua O Ewalina" which is found on his latest album with Daniel Ho. Small world. |

Aloha leokiekie, Yeah, it's sad about uncle Sol. Hope he's doing better. I'm glad I caught a few of their shows. It was nahenahe, man. Funny how many singers Uncle Dennis has influenced, yeah? He also got me into leo ki'eki'e. He was one of the greats. It's "shaka" that you learning from uncle Saichi. I aloha "Nani Hanalei". He hit the upper registers on that mele. I often look for the winner's of the Kindy Sproat(brah, that's another one with falsetto yeah?) contest. For some reason, the Big Island always get those Hawaiians with the nahenahe voices. Take it easy, Hawaiian...A hui hou, Keali'i. |

Mahalo ia 'oe e Leoki'eki'e!
I listened too, and didn't know who played or what it was, but it was *impressive*. Mahalo to you too moneyjunkie, for calling it to our attention.
I couldn't recognize the player - though I felt I could rule out about 6 or 8 famous ones everyone is familiar with. Lotta good that did me!
'O taropatch.net no ka 'oi! Mahalo ia 'oe e Andy!
aloha, Sarah
p.s. does anyone else have the feeling that this piece has that "Maui sound", like you could hear Kevin and Ikaika doing it?
