Does anyone have a slack key arrangement of Andy Cummings' Waikiki? (Or, if not, at least the melody.)

it's in jim beloff's hawaiian music book (and it's in G!) it's a jazzy song, and so there's room for being creative with chords.

Konabob, it's your version of it that got it stuck in my head in the first place! |

Hi Craig -
I tabbed out a fairly literal arrangement in G6th tuning maybe two years ago as an incentive to actually learn the song. I've tried teaching it at various workshops, but get a lot of blank stares...
Because of the modulation in the "middle 8" (yeah, it's a old casual player's term...) it's kinda a bear to get all the bass notes working. I really haven't played it enough to make the tune sing, which is when I like to go back and fine-tune the arrangement... so for now it's more of an excercise.
IF I ever get the time, the tune will be in the "advanced arranging for slack key" book I'm doing for Mel Bay. To be published sometime before the next millenium...
Hey KonaBob -- how's about hopping the Molokai Ferry on the 19th and bopping over for the Molokai Slack Key Festival? I'll buy ya a nice cold beverage.
Cheers,

I have heard that Keola is not 100% sure where his event will be next year. I for one, would love to see it back on the Big Island! Maybe John Keawe can work something out in Kohala. It is really beautiful up there.
Beautiful is right. Now all we need is a dandy retreat center capable of handling 100 people in the style to which they have become acustomed....
Know of any????
I'll still buy you a nice cold beverage ... only you'll have to order it yourself and convince the bartender to send me the bill.
"Yeah, this guy in Oregon's paying. Really, dude..."

Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to make it this year (hopefully next). Not that it would help if I could...the ony kind of backup I'm capable of providing at this point is standing behind you. |
