it's hard to top the rollocking levity of distributing tab, but...
i'm working on that most serious of songs, ka`aahi kahului by palani vaughan. a few months ago i finally broke down and got one of his collections, and heard his original version. it is awesome, especially since i normally only hear campy versions for the tourists (but who can resist telling the story about how the only train on maui now goes from lahaina to lahaina, and trying to get the audience to go "whoo-whoo!" along with you?? )
i have a nice start in taro patch, decending a G7 (003430), to Gb7, F7 and then to the open G. but, i'm trying to work up a pa`ani. do you have a recording with a pa`ani that you especially like?
thanks, keith

for the Gb7 i play xx232x, and the F7 xx121x. i like these inner voice chords here.
yeah, i'm abusing hawaiian. a group of ukistas i play with use pa`ani as a noun, to indicate an instrumental solo.
i don't know mark's song, but i'll check it out! my ipo has been buggin' me to pull together a CD of train songs (she grew up in truckee and has train tracks instead of veins)
the words to ka`ahi kahului, from huapala, are at http://www.huapala.org/Kaa/Kaaahi_Kahului.html.
aloha, keith

I suspected that - I like those 1/2 step progressions, especially when voiced inside. Very tasty.

Keith,
Don't have any versions on CD that come to mind right off, but there's a real nice, 'rolicking' version on video: "Gabby Pahininui Family & Friends."
The whole gang is arrayed out in the back yard along with Palani Vaughn and Peter Moon, and they do a pretty interesting run-through, with plenty enough tag-team pa'ani to keep youse busy for awhile. I haven't seen it for some time, but I do recall that there's not nearly enough close-ups of the parts of the instruments (digits) that we all want/need to see.

Keith, I have the Pahinui backyard video if you'd like to see it. Let me know today and I'll bring it to M3 tonight. |

Keoki Kahumoku does a fun version with Herb Ohta, Jr on their CD "Hawaiian From the Heart"

Keoki and George performed this song at the first Aloha Music Camp

Aloha kakou,
Keoki Kahumoku's version is lots of fun. We heard him do it "live" on tour, and he brought down the house.
Keith, you aren't abusing Hawaiian. Pa'ani is also a noun (meaning game, etc.). And I've heard it used by slack key masters to refer to the instrumental break usually put between verses, which is how you used the word.
