I recently got the new Dean Lum album -- even after a dozen listens, it still blows me away. Nahenahe falsetto with superb backup. I might even break my general "princimple" and try to tab some of that.

Anyway -- can anyone share info on Dean? Who is he, Where's he come from? Where's he play, etc?

Thanks in advance

Aloha Raymond and all you slackers, if I'm not mistaken, Dean Lum with another guy also named Dean?(I forgot his last name) thus Dean and Dean used to be back-up musicians for comedian Frank Delima at the Chart House in the 1970's - 1980's . The Chart house is located next to the Prince Hotel down by the Ala Wai Yacht Harbour, Honolulu, Hawaii. I was walking pass there on my way to the Hale Koa hotel the other day and I heard some soothing music coming from upstairs. I suspect the two Deans may still perform there.

Stay healthy and Happy everyone. Alooooha!

There's an online review of the "new" album here that includes some background:

http://starbulletin.com/columnist/column.php?id=6187&col_id=28

The review mentions that the two Deans (Dean Shimabukuro is the other one) broke up in the mid-80s but another article elsewhere mentions them playing a 1997 wedding.

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

That CD is a re-release -- the original album seems to have been released with little or no fanfare, but this one is gaining popularity (rightfully!). Whenever I play it at KKCR, inevitably someone will call and ask "Who was that woman you just played?". Ha!

I get the same kinds of calls when I play Leokane Pryor's CD:

I encourage all TP'ers to check this one out. (I agree with review -- don't be put off by the bad reverb on Track 1 -- the rest really smokes.) Will also check out Pryor.
BTW-- Auntie -- love your palm tree ratings.
