Time to jump in! I'm from the Midwest just south of Chicago in North West Indiana. The wife and I are going to be landing on Maui 5/21. We got hitched there at the church in Honokowai about 16yrs ago. Been back every year, can't get enough! The trips are getting longer and longer. I'm about 5 songs into Ozzies Book at this time. Can't get enough of that either.Like everyone else I'm probably trying to run before I can walk. This music just gives me an outer body experience! I'm sure we'll hit the Blue Marlin for open mike night to hear some of that good island talent. Is Hopas the small place behind Lifes a Beach and across the street from the grocery store in Kehei? We've been there many times and have never been disapointed with the music (always been rock). Only once did we hear a couple of guys (I think they were called The Hawai-ians ?) that did some guitar picking. Just wanted to say Aloha to all and I can't wait for that door on the jet to open and get hit with that tropical breeze!!

hi garry! it always makes me happy to meet another slack key player, and another maui-ophile, and it's great when it's somebody who is both...
hapa's brew haus is in the lipoa shopping center; don't know where that is in relation to life's a beach. give them a call at 879-9001 to find out who's playing.
you taking your guitar? if not, i heartily recommend picking up a ukulele and working on some slack key uke down at the beach. bounty music has the best selection (kahului, five minutes from OGG, call 871-1141 for directions), but every now and then i've found kamaka ukes for sale at long's...
have a great trip, keith

Welcome -- I lived at about 106th & Ewing for a while -- (Chicago DOES have an East Side.)I always thought what this site needs are more people from the southern end of Lake Michigan! I'd suggest you also hit Keola's show. You might even try for a lesson with him. |

Ray, the next thing you'll tell me is that you worked at Republic Steel! I worked there for 9 years. I used to frequent a few pubs/saloons speak easys in the area after a long hot day at da mill. How bout Wolf Lake? Ever play on any 16" softball teams? I do have one question for ya's. Does anyone local on Maui or another island make any nice leather guitar straps? and where would I find one? I'd like to get me one. Garry |

Gary, Welcome to the forum. Last time i was in Maui we listened several evenings to Kalai Smythe at one of the upscale hotels (Four Seasons???) in Wailea. YOu'd better find out where stuff is going on well before you get there. I was very disappointed in the lack of information about slack key once i hit the ground there. The guys and gals on this forumm will be your best resource for finding music before you get there. This web site may help also; http://www.mele.com/ConcertCalendar.cgi Good luck, take you guitar, have a great time. Karl |
