Hello everybody, just joined. I'm a hapa haole currently living in Honolulu, but born in California and spent most of my lifetime in New York. Just started slack key less than a year ago, through a class at UH Manoa. Have been playing guitar for five years, ukulele for two. Looking forward to learning more from everyone. Bryan

hi bryan! welcome to our group!
i love the idea of a university teaching slack key. how is it done? does your professor teach music theory, or do you start out by listening to recordings, or do you start right off working on a song? do they use the hawaiian "watch and copy" method or do you work off of sheet music?

Hey Bryan, welcome to the TaroPatch! Are you taking Lance Takamiya's class? I purchased the material from his intermediate class...he has some really beautiful arrangements. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Keith, I don't know what the curriculum is like now, but when my daughter was at UH Manoa for a semester in '97, Ozzie Kotani was the instructor! Wish I'd known that before i visited her...I could have signed up for the whole semester. I am not certain how the course was taught. As it was I did not get to meet him, but we stayed 10 days and i got my first ever slack key lesson from Bobby Moderow instead. Karl |
