You can also watch Uncle Ray play it on either his "teaching" video/DVD (the DVD is available from http://www.thegtw.com ) or the "That's Ki Ho`alu" video. |

Guys...Thanks for the further help...I have the Led Kaapana instructional video and I'm trying to emulate the way he does it, so combining that with the input I got here as well as listening to Loo and Kotani I hopefully have enough that I can come up with a reasonable facsimile of the real thing...plus my music budget has been closed down for the time being...I've been playing for about 10 years and I think I have promised myself for each of those years that I'm going to lay out some serious bucks for a good guitar, serious to me is $1,000-$1,500. The one I have now is a gift, originally bought for $600, shown to an "expert" who said it's only worth $300, but I like it, not a bad sound.
Anyway, I hope to buy at the end of summer and settle in for a cold Canadian winter to continue working on Old Timer's Hula as well as the 4 other slack key #'s I've come close to mastering.
It would be interesting to hear from others as to whether they have a favourite guitar for this type of music...I know I'll probably look at Martins first, but eventually settle for the one that sounds best to me and not worry too much about the brand name.
Do others play slack key with an electric/acoustic guitar or a pickup in their acoustic?
Thanks again

I use a Baggs dual source in my classical guitar (on a recommendation from Keola,) through a Baggs ParaAcoustic DI (typically) into my California Blond. Very natural sound. More power than I'll probably ever need.

I use the new Baggs M1 soundhole pickup (combination magnetic and soundboard vibrations) on my steel strings, also through a ParaAcoustic DI. Great sound and you can move it between guitars very easily. There's a sound demo at www.lrbaggs.com
The thing with guitar pickups is that for any pickup you'll find people who love it and people that hate it. It's kind of like buying stereo speakers...you have to find the ones that sound best to your ears. Fortunately, you'll find sites on the Web that let you compare the sound of many of the most popular pickups. |

Barry,
The Martin 0017 (much nicer than the 15 series, which isn't bad), is well within your price range. It's a sweet instrument. Find one and play it. You could always make a trip to So. Cal (Carlsbad - Buffalo Bros - they always have a couple). You could also get a Taylor 314ce or 414ce, both with electronics in your price range. There are a lot of other great choices too. |

Just some thoughts on guitars for Slack Key. I first started with an old Yamaha I bought for $150 years ago. The neck was warped and it could probably have doubled as a bow and arrow, but I played it anyway. When I first met Uncle Ray Kane, he played my guitar and said "Gee, I guess you like it like this, huh?". Well, no, but it was what I had. Uncle had many many guitars over the years, several Martins and I believe he settled on a Lowden (cedar top, walnut sides and back -- very sweet and very bright and very alive if you know what I mean, got it from The Guitar Shop in D.C.). I bought my first Martin after working with Uncle Ray for a couple of years. Loved it. I felt it was time to finally buy a Martin as I'd earned it. Got a bad case of "GAS" (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome), and bought an old 00-17. After fixing a few cracks and breathing life back into it, it is one of my favorite slack key guitars -- the all mahogany sound is soooo sweet for finger picking. If you want to hit it hard with a flat pick, it's the wrong guitar for you. If you want to communicate "aloha" through your music, it is a good place to start. Check out the current releases from Martin like the 00-15, price is good, sound is sweet, can get with Fishman if you'd like, and it is very nice. And, the CF Martin gang back in Pennsylvania are a wonderful group so you're buying into "family". You can always spend lots and lots and lots more later as your "GAS" gets worse!
Have fun! Aloha
